Empowering Farmers: Khemanand Dudh Transforms Onion Production
Access to modern post-harvest infrastructure is crucial for improving farmers’ incomes and minimizing post-harvest losses. This is exemplified by the success of Khemanand Dudh and Krishi Producer Company Limited, a pioneering enterprise based in Ahilyanagar. Through a comprehensive post-harvest processing and procurement network, the company has revolutionized the onion value chain in Maharashtra, showcasing the impactful role of the Venture Capital Fund for Scheduled Castes (VCF-SC) under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
Integrated Value Chain Development
Under the PMKSY–Operation Greens Scheme, Khemanand has launched an integrated value chain development project for onions across five locations in Maharashtra. This initiative encompasses all aspects of onion processing, including procurement, grading, sorting, packaging, and storage, complemented by a dehydration plant. The project has also received backing from the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India, recognizing its potential to bolster agricultural infrastructure and enhance the livelihoods of farmers.
In 2023, VCF-SC provided vital funding of ₹ 12 crore. This financial support, consisting of venture capital assistance through equity and optionally convertible debentures, has allowed the company to augment its post-harvest processing capabilities, expand its procurement activities, and establish a robust supply chain that effectively links farmers to organized markets.
Significant Impact on Farmers
The benefits of this initiative are evident. Khemanand now collaborates with nearly 8,000 farmers, generating employment opportunities and creating valuable rural assets. The company has achieved an impressive annual revenue of ₹ 25.51 crore and increased its net worth to ₹ 30 crore. Through improved grading, handling, and storage facilities, the project has significantly reduced post-harvest losses, provided better price realizations for farmers, and forged strong market connections with institutional buyers and retail companies, thereby fostering sustainable rural livelihoods.
Reflecting on the company’s journey, Mr. Prashant Sadashiv Lokhande expressed, “The support extended through the Venture Capital Fund for Scheduled Castes (VCF-SC), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, strengthened our mission of empowering farmers through better market access and value addition. Today, Khemanand Dudh and Krishi Producer Company is helping farmers secure improved price realization, reduce wastage, and create sustainable rural livelihoods while contributing to inclusive agricultural growth.”
Driving Economic Growth
The achievements of Khemanand Dudh and Krishi Producer Company Limited illustrate how targeted financial assistance from the VCF-SC is propelling enterprises to develop sophisticated agricultural infrastructure, create jobs, and enhance farmers’ earnings. The initiative emphasizes entrepreneurship and inclusive value-chain development, which are essential for generating sustainable livelihood opportunities and fostering equitable economic growth across the nation.
