Vizianagaram Leads India in Sustainable Water Management
Inspired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s recent appeal in the 135th edition of Mann Ki Baat, communities across India have stepped up their efforts under the Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari: Catch the Rain (JSJB:CTR) campaign. The Vizianagaram district in Andhra Pradesh stands out as a remarkable example of how community involvement, combined with scientific water management and the convergence of government programs, can enhance groundwater recharge and bolster long-term water security.
Innovative Water Restoration Initiatives
Through the Jaladhara Jalaharathi program implemented via convergence efforts, Vizianagaram has focused on restoring traditional minor irrigation tanks and their feeder channels. This initiative aims not only to improve surface water storage but also to revive natural systems that replenish groundwater aquifers.
Impressive Achievements
The district has completed an impressive 8,973 water conservation projects, rejuvenating 6,424 minor irrigation tanks and 2,549 feeder channels. This initiative has generated 1.28 crore person-days of employment while creating lasting assets for groundwater recharge.
In total, large-scale desilting and restoration efforts have removed approximately 109.9 lakh cubic meters of silt, cleared 82.48 lakh square meters of vegetation, and restored over 2,090 kilometers of feeder channels. This restoration allows rainwater to flow freely into tanks and recharge zones, significantly minimizing runoff losses.
Impact on Groundwater Availability
These interventions are set to greatly improve groundwater availability in the district. The revitalized tank system is expected to create an additional storage potential of 0.70 TMC (thousand million cubic feet). Combined with the restored feeder channels, an estimated additional 0.60 TMC of groundwater recharge will enhance aquifer replenishment and improve local water resource resilience even during dry periods.
Focusing on Groundwater-Deficit Areas
Vizianagaram has recognized the vital importance of managing groundwater resources effectively. The district has prioritized 193 groundwater-deficit villages, covering 596 feeder channels and 1,767 minor irrigation tanks. Moreover, it has restored 94 cascade tank systems to improve hydrological connectivity between water bodies, facilitating better infiltration and groundwater recharge throughout the catchments.
Community Involvement: The Key to Success
The success observed in Vizianagaram illustrates that sustainable groundwater management transcends mere engineering solutions; it’s rooted in active public participation. Farmers, local communities, Gram Panchayats, and district administration have collectively revived traditional water bodies that had deteriorated in recharge capacity over time. This community involvement embodies the spirit of Jan Bhagidari, radically transforming water conservation into a grassroots movement.
