Indian Railways Transports Live Donor Heart via Vande Bharat Express

In a groundbreaking achievement for Indian healthcare, Indian Railways successfully transported a live donor heart by train for the first time in the country. The heart was transported from Surat to Ahmedabad aboard Train No. 20901, the Mumbai Central-Gandhinagar Capital Vande Bharat Express. This operation ensured the heart’s timely arrival for transplantation at the U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology & Research Centre, Ahmedabad, reinforcing the railway’s pivotal role in emergency medical transportation.

Seamless Coordination for Timely Transport

The transportation of the life-saving organ highlighted the speed, punctuality, and reliability of the Vande Bharat Express. Given the critical time sensitivity associated with organ transplants, meticulous planning and coordination were essential. The efforts involved collaboration between Indian Railways, the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Gujarat State Police, and medical teams. Every phase of the journey was synchronized to ensure the donor heart reached its destination within the necessary viability window.

Creating a Green Corridor

To facilitate the uninterrupted movement of the heart, a dedicated Green Corridor was established from Platform No. 1 of Ahmedabad Railway Station to the U.N. Mehta Institute. This corridor, set up by the Railway Protection Force alongside the Gujarat State Police, allowed for swift and direct transport, ensuring that the medical team could begin the transplant procedure without delay.

A Commitment to Life-Saving Services

Shri Ved Prakash, the Divisional Railway Manager in Ahmedabad, expressed pride in this achievement, stating, “This is a moment of immense pride and satisfaction for Indian Railways. The successful transportation of a live donor heart demonstrates our commitment to serving society beyond conventional passenger and freight transportation. In such life-saving missions, every minute is crucial.” He emphasized that ensuring the heart reached its destination swiftly was a matter of utmost responsibility and a critical part of their service.

Reinforcement of Railway Capabilities

The landmark mission further showcases the capabilities of the Vande Bharat Express, notably its efficiency in supporting time-sensitive operations due to its high-speed connectivity and operational reliability. It illustrates how modern railway infrastructure is essential in bolstering the healthcare ecosystem during emergencies.

Acknowledging Collaborators

Indian Railways conveyed its gratitude towards all stakeholders involved, including the RPF, Gujarat State Police, medical professionals, organ transplant coordinators, and railway officials. Their coordinated efforts were instrumental in the success of this challenging mission.

This historic accomplishment not only highlights Indian Railways’ commitment to providing safe and efficient transportation services but also its dedication to contributing to life-saving humanitarian initiatives and enhancing the nation’s healthcare system.
