India Boosts Container Manufacturing with Global Shipping Partnership
A leading global shipping line has placed an order with an Indian container manufacturer for the production of shipping containers. This milestone was marked with the unveiling of a domestically produced prototype container in Dadri, Uttar Pradesh, on March 7, 2026. The new containers comply with international quality and safety standards, including guidelines established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Convention for Safe Containers (CSC).
Government Invests in Container Manufacturing
During the Budget Speech for 2026-27, the government announced a significant initiative to bolster container manufacturing in India, allocating ₹10,000 crore to establish a competitive ecosystem in this sector. This move aims to position India as a key player in global container production, leveraging its manufacturing capabilities.
Expansion of National Waterways
As part of efforts to enhance maritime infrastructure, the Union Budget for 2026 revealed plans for the operationalization of 19 new National Waterways over the next five years. This initiative builds on the existing network of 32 operational waterways, which facilitate cargo and passenger movement across a total of 111 declared waterways.
Comprehensive Package to Strengthen Shipbuilding
Additionally, the Indian government has approved a vast ₹69,725 crore package to reinforce domestic shipbuilding capabilities, maritime financing, and shipyard development. This comprehensive package includes:
- Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Scheme (SBFAS): An extension of the existing Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Policy with an investment of ₹24,736 crore aimed at reducing the cost disadvantages faced by Indian shipyards when compared to their global counterparts.
- Maritime Development Fund (MDF): A corpus of ₹25,000 crore set up for long-term financial support in the maritime sector, which includes a ₹20,000 crore Maritime Investment Fund and a ₹5,000 crore Interest Incentivisation Fund.
- Shipbuilding Development Scheme (SbDS): With a budget of ₹19,989 crore, this scheme aims to boost the shipbuilding output in India by establishing new shipbuilding clusters and expanding existing shipyards.
With a high employment multiplier of 6.4 in the shipbuilding industry, these initiatives are projected to create approximately 2.2 million jobs, both directly and indirectly. This ambitious plan reflects the government’s commitment to driving economic growth through advancements in maritime capabilities and infrastructure.
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, shared these significant developments in a written reply to the Lok Sabha, highlighting the government’s strategic focus on enhancing India’s position in the global shipping and maritime sector.
