PM-KISAN Scheme Extended: A Boost for Farmers Until 2031
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has greenlit the extension of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) Scheme for another five years, from 2026-27 to 2030-31. With a substantial financial commitment of Rs. 3.15 lakh crore, this approval underscores the government’s dedication to enhancing the livelihoods of farmers, laying a strong foundation for the nation’s overall prosperity.
The PM-KISAN Scheme, which debuted in February 2019, aims to provide crucial financial support to eligible farming families. Under this initiative, farmers can receive financial assistance amounting to Rs. 6,000 annually, distributed in three separate payments directly into their bank accounts. This approach not only simplifies the process but also ensures transparency through Aadhaar authentication and a robust Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.
Key Achievements of PM-KISAN
The results from the PM-KISAN Scheme have been remarkable. As of now, over Rs. 4.47 lakh crore has been transferred to farmers through 23 instalments. The most recent instalment benefited over 9.49 crore farmers, facilitating the release of more than Rs. 18,984 crore.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the government disbursed upwards of Rs. 1.71 lakh crore to support farmers amid challenging times. Notably, female farmers have also been a significant focus, with women receiving more than Rs. 1.06 lakh crore in assistance, accounting for nearly 25% of the total beneficiaries.
Strengthening Agricultural Investment
The financial support provided by the PM-KISAN Scheme has enabled farmers to invest in essential agricultural inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, and machinery. This strong backing has contributed to a boost in farmers’ production capabilities and has allowed them to rely less on informal credit, thereby enhancing the financial well-being of rural households.
Independent Evaluations Confirm Positive Impact
Independent assessments have validated the efficacy of the PM-KISAN Scheme. A study by the Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO) of NITI Aayog found that over 92% of beneficiaries used the financial aid for agricultural purposes, while approximately 85% reported increased agricultural income and decreased reliance on informal borrowing.
From 2020 to 2025, significant growth in food grain production was recorded, including a 21.18% increase in total output, reflecting the supportive measures provided to farmers under PM-KISAN.
Digital India and Direct Benefits
The scheme exemplifies the successful implementation of Digital India initiatives. Through online verification and Aadhaar authentication, support is directly credited to farmers’ accounts. Not only does this enhance their financial independence, but it also empowers farmers by boosting their confidence and capacity to invest in agriculture.
