Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Initiative Sees Positive Trends in Child Welfare
The Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) initiative has emerged as a pivotal force in addressing the declining Child Sex Ratio (CSR) in India and empowering girls and women across the nation. This government scheme aims to shift societal attitudes towards the girl child by engaging and motivating various stakeholders, including families, communities, and organizations. Recently, it has been integrated into the broader SAMBAL vertical of the Mission Shakti program, ensuring that all districts in the country benefit from multi-sectoral interventions designed to create tangible changes.
BBBP’s transformative journey from a policy initiative to a national movement has been remarkable, rallying partnerships with government entities, media, civil society, and the public. The initiative’s primary objective is to instigate behavioural and social changes regarding the perception and treatment of girls in society.
Improvements in Sex Ratio and Education
According to the latest data from the Health Management Information System (HMIS) under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, the national Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) has improved significantly, rising from 918 in 2014-15 to a provisional figure of 929 in 2025-26. Similarly, the Union Territory of Delhi has seen an increase in the SRB, climbing from 901 to 915 during the same period. These statistics highlight the effectiveness of the BBBP in influencing positive change in the birth ratio of girls.
Moreover, educational statistics reflect promising trends as well. The Gross Enrolment Ratio of girls at the secondary school level has also increased nationally, from 75.51% in 2014-15 to 83.4% in 2025-26, according to UDISE data from the Ministry of Education. In the Union Territory of Delhi, this figure has surged from 99.13% to an impressive 108.3% over the same timeframe, showcasing a significant commitment to ensuring that girls receive an education.
Government’s Commitment
This encouraging information was recently shared by Smt. Savitri Thakur, the Minister of State for Women and Child Development, in a response to questions raised in the Lok Sabha. The government’s dedication to promoting the welfare of girls through initiatives like BBBP serves as a vital component in the broader fight against gender discrimination and for the empowerment of women and girls in India.
