AI Labs Highlight the Continued Importance of IT Companies, Says Infosys CEO Salil Parekh
BENGALURU: Salil Parekh, CEO of Infosys, will retire in March 2024 after a transformative tenure that began in 2018. Under his leadership, the company doubled its revenue from $10 billion to $20 billion and secured over $100 billion in large deals. Parekh focused on building a disciplined and predictable business model, aligning with chairman Nandan Nilekani’s vision of making Infosys a reliable player in the IT services sector.
Strategic Focus on Client Needs
In a recent interview, Parekh addressed concerns about Infosys being perceived as risk-averse compared to competitors like TCS and HCL. He emphasized that the company prioritizes decisions that genuinely benefit clients rather than chasing trends. Since his arrival, Infosys has shifted its business model, increasing its digital transformation share from 20% to 60%. The company has maintained strong organic growth, supported by a disciplined approach to margins and cash flow.
Partnerships with Tech Giants
When asked about potential competition from tech companies like Anthropic and OpenAI, Parekh expressed confidence in Infosys’s partnerships with these firms. He noted that their need for deployment services validates the importance of established service providers. With a workforce of 300,000 and long-standing relationships with 1,800 clients, Infosys holds a competitive edge over newer entrants in the market.
AI Services as a Growth Opportunity
Parekh sees AI services as a significant growth area, estimating a $300 billion opportunity in the sector. Currently, AI contributes 8% of Infosys’s revenue, which he views as a solid foundation for long-term growth. He compared the evolution of AI services to previous transitions in cloud and digital technologies, suggesting that the entire business will benefit as AI becomes a larger part of the company’s offerings.
Leadership and Succession Planning
Reflecting on his legacy, Parekh highlighted the importance of stable leadership and a cohesive team at Infosys. He praised the company’s culture, which he believes has returned to its roots from five to ten years prior to his tenure. Regarding his successor, Ashiss Kumar Dash, Parekh noted the strength of internal leadership and the board’s decision to promote from within, citing Dash’s extensive experience and balanced approach to growth and client relations.
