Samsung Reports Record $62 Billion Profit in Q2 Driven by AI Chip Surge

Samsung Electronics has reported a record quarterly operating profit of 89.5 trillion won ($62 billion) for the April-June period, driven by surging demand for memory chips amid the artificial intelligence boom. This figure represents a more than 19-fold increase compared to the same quarter last year. The announcement follows a similar record from rival SK Hynix, highlighting the robust performance of the chip industry.

Despite these impressive results, investor sentiment has soured, with shares of both companies declining sharply this week. Concerns over substantial investments to expand production capacity and intensifying competition from China have contributed to this downturn.

Semiconductor Business Drives Quarter

Samsung’s semiconductor division was the primary driver of its second-quarter success, benefiting from rising chip prices and increased demand for AI servers. The company also reported higher shipments of advanced high-bandwidth memory chips used in AI applications. However, this strong performance in the chip sector could not fully offset an operating loss in Samsung’s mobile, television, and home appliances division, which faced challenges from rising component costs. Alongside the record operating profit, Samsung achieved its highest-ever quarterly revenue at 171.5 trillion won ($119 billion). The company anticipates continued strong demand for its memory products in the latter half of the year, citing ongoing expansion of AI infrastructure.

SK Hynix Also Posts Record Revenue, But Misses Expectations

SK Hynix reported second-quarter revenue of 60.5 trillion won ($42 billion), also a record, but the figures fell short of market expectations. Following the announcement, SK Hynix’s shares dropped by more than 9%, mirroring a decline in Samsung’s stock during the same period. Together, Samsung and SK Hynix account for approximately two-thirds of the global memory chip production. Both companies are investing heavily in semiconductor manufacturing facilities and data centers as South Korea advances its AI initiatives.

Heavy Investments Raise Concerns

While the demand for AI has bolstered the memory chip market, analysts have raised concerns regarding the potential returns on the companies’ extensive spending plans. Last month, Samsung and SK Hynix announced a combined investment of 800 trillion won ($554 billion) in a new chipmaking hub in South Korea’s southwest region to meet the rising AI-driven demand. Investors are also wary of increasing competition from China, which poses additional challenges for South Korean chipmakers.

China’s Chip Progress Weighs on Investor Sentiment

Investor concerns have intensified following reports that a state-owned Chinese company has begun mass production of domestically developed immersion deep-ultraviolet (DUV) lithography machines, crucial for advanced chip manufacturing. Additionally, the strong market debut of Chinese memory chipmaker ChangXin Memory Technologies has further impacted investor sentiment. These developments have raised worries about the competitive landscape for Samsung and SK Hynix as they continue to expand their semiconductor operations.

South Korean Chipmakers and AI Partnerships

The push to enhance AI-related semiconductor capabilities has prompted South Korean technology firms to strengthen collaborations with global tech companies. The leaders of Samsung, SK Hynix, and Hyundai recently joined President Lee Jae Myung during his trip to San Francisco, where they announced plans for hundreds of billions of dollars in cooperation with major U.S. technology firms. These agreements involve AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic, as well as chip designers Nvidia and Broadcom, focusing on chip technologies, data centers, and other AI infrastructure.
