India Enhances Infectious Disease Preparedness Amid Rising Threats
The Union Health Ministry of India is intensifying its efforts to combat emerging infectious diseases through a comprehensive review and enhancement of its preparedness strategies. This initiative includes the establishment of a robust network of Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratories (VRDL), genomic surveillance initiatives, and wastewater surveillance, all aimed at the early detection of critical pathogens. The ministry emphasizes the importance of simulation exercises and rapid response mechanisms to ensure readiness in the face of potential outbreaks.
Integrated Disease Surveillance Program
Under the guidance of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) is being effectively implemented to monitor and respond to communicable diseases that are prone to outbreaks. The VRDL network, part of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), has seen significant expansion, now comprising 163 laboratories that include 11 Regional VRDLs, 27 State VRDLs, and 125 Medical College VRDLs. This expansion is vital for strengthening diagnostic capacity across India.
Decentralized Diagnostics and Data Reporting
Moreover, new Infectious Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratories, along with four Regional Next-Generation Sequencing Hubs, have been inaugurated to support decentralized testing and genomic characterization of pathogens. These facilities will also facilitate standardized data generation and timely reporting, which are essential for effective public health surveillance and outbreak responses.
Strengthening Coordination and Response
In response to public health emergencies, the Union Health Ministry is enhancing coordination between Central and State health authorities. This is achieved through real-time disease surveillance and reporting as part of the IDSP/Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP). Regular sharing of information and collaborative outbreak response mechanisms are key components of this strategy. During outbreaks, the Ministry provides technical support, including collaborative investigations, risk assessments, and laboratory confirmations, deploying multidisciplinary experts as needed through the National Joint Outbreak Response Team.
Future Health Infrastructure Improvements
In addition to these measures, the government has launched the Pradhan Mantri – Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM). This initiative aims to strengthen the capacity of health care facilities across all levels—primary, secondary, and tertiary—to better identify and manage new and emerging diseases.
Shri Prataprao Jadhav, the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, shared these updates in a written response during a session of the Rajya Sabha, emphasizing the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health.
