India Launches Tex-Eco Initiative for Sustainable Textile Growth
The Union Finance Minister unveiled the “Tex-Eco Initiative” in the Union Budget for 2026–27, aimed at transforming India’s textile and apparel sector into a sustainable, globally competitive industry. This initiative focuses on pioneering technologies that foster a circular economy, which includes efforts in textile waste management, recycling, and the creation of high-value products from discarded textiles.
Innovative Collaborations for Sustainable Practices
The Tex-Eco Initiative underscores the government’s commitment to supporting innovative solutions alongside research institutions, Textile Research Associations, and industry players. The initiative seeks to encourage the development of recycled fibres, new materials, and sustainable packaging, nurturing an environment conducive to both ecological and economic resilience.
Strategic Projects to Drive Change
To further advance sustainable production practices, the government has launched several pilot projects across India. Initiatives like “Eliminating Hazardous Chemicals from Textile Fashion Supply Chain,” in partnership with UNIDO, aim to phase out such chemicals in the apparel sector while minimizing energy consumption and waste. Another project, “Accelerating the Transition of the Indian Textile Sector towards Circularity” (In-Tex India), focuses on promoting circular business models through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies.
Investment in Research and Development
Under the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM), numerous research and development projects concentrated on environmentally sustainable technologies and materials have been authorized. Additionally, the PM Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel Parks are set up as part of a world-class industrial ecosystem that promotes sustainable industrialization and innovative practices.
Government Initiatives Addressing Textile Waste
In response to mounting textile waste, the government has actively signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with various organizations to boost the procurement of upcycled products within public sectors. Furthermore, the release of the report, “Mapping of Textile Waste Value Chain in India,” provides an in-depth analysis of textile waste production, recovery methods, and recycling technologies that enhance circularity in the textile sector.

The comprehensive approach taken by the government blends technology development with research and innovation to strengthen the demand for sustainable and recycled textile products.
