First Look: ‘Operation Safed Sagar’ Trailer Drops, Starring Siddharth and Jimmy Shergill in Netflix’s Kargil War-Inspired Series

Netflix has just released the trailer for its highly anticipated military drama, “Operation Safed Sagar.” This upcoming series sheds light on one of the most significant yet lesser-known chapters of the 1999 Kargil War. Based on real events, it chronicles the Indian Air Force’s vital role during Operation Safed Sagar, a historic high-altitude air campaign that was crucial in supporting the Indian Army throughout the conflict.

Set against the backdrop of the Kargil War, the series illustrates how the Indian Air Force intervened after Pakistani forces occupied strategic positions in challenging mountainous terrain. Recognized as the world’s highest air operation, Operation Safed Sagar marked a defining moment in India’s military history, showcasing the bravery of the country’s youngest fighter squadron as they faced one of the toughest wartime challenges.

The Golden Arrows Squadron

At the heart of “Operation Safed Sagar” is the Golden Arrows Squadron, led by Wing Commander B.S. Dhanoa, known as ‘Tony,’ portrayed by Jimmy Shergill. Alongside him is Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja, played by Siddharth. As the conflict escalates in the mountains of Kargil, the squadron’s young fighter pilots are tasked with executing dangerous missions under extraordinary circumstances. The series also explores the emotional resilience of the families waiting at home, highlighting the unwavering support of loved ones behind the men in uniform.

To ensure authenticity, the creators conducted extensive research and consulted with Indian Air Force veterans and families connected to the operation. Filming took place across operational Indian Air Force bases, utilizing actual aircraft and military infrastructure to recreate the scale and intensity of the mission in real high-altitude environments.

Insights from the Creators

Monika Shergill, Vice-President of Content at Netflix India, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Some stories are a privilege to tell and Operation Safed Sagar is one of them. Bringing the Indian Air Force’s role in the Kargil conflict to the screen has been our most ambitious production in India to date, made possible through the extraordinary support of the Indian Air Force.” She praised the cast, technicians, and VFX teams for their contributions, emphasizing the authenticity and craftsmanship that went into the series. Shergill also acknowledged the fresh talent behind the project, including creators Abhijit Parmar and Kushal Srivastava, and director Oni Sen.

Reflecting on his directorial vision, Oni Sen shared, “From the very beginning, we wanted to tell the story of Operation Safed Sagar with honesty, scale, and emotional truth. While the operation itself is extraordinary, what stayed with us throughout this journey were the pilots, officers, and families whose courage, resilience, and sacrifices continue to inspire us.” He expressed gratitude to Netflix for their support and to the entire cast and crew for their dedication in bringing these real-life heroes to the screen.

A Call to Inspire

The series also received guidance from Air Chief Marshal (Retd.) B.S. Dhanoa, who played a significant role in the actual operation. He remarked, “India is ready to hear this story now. In fact, it is long overdue. Operation Safed Sagar deserves to be told, and I’m glad it is finally being brought to life.” Dhanoa emphasized the importance of sharing these stories to inspire young people to join the Indian Air Force, stating, “If this series succeeds in igniting that spark and encourages more young Indians to join the Indian Air Force, I would consider that my objective achieved.”

Directed by Oni Sen, “Operation Safed Sagar” is created by Abhijeet Singh Parmar and Kushal Srivastava, produced by Sanjay Routray and Sarita Patil of Matchbox Shots LLP, along with Mehboob Pal Singh Brar of Feel Good Films. The ensemble cast features Siddharth, Jimmy Shergill, Abhay Verma, Dia Mirza, Prajakta Koli, Adil Hussain, Mihir Ahuja, Taaruk Raina, Arnav Bhasin, and Amrita Bagchi.

Blending large-scale action with deeply personal stories of courage, sacrifice, and service, “Operation Safed Sagar” aims to bring an untold chapter of India’s military history to audiences around the world. The series premieres on August 7, exclusively on Netflix.
