UK Supports India’s Security Concerns in Trade Deal Based on Trust

NEW DELHI: The India-UK trade deal, which took effect on Wednesday, signifies a deepening relationship based on trust and mutual interests, according to UK officials. They emphasized the importance of addressing India’s national security concerns and issues related to financial fugitives. This development is seen as a step towards greater geopolitical alignment between the two nations, particularly concerning extradition and counterterrorism.

British High Commissioner Lindy Cameron described the free trade agreement as the “new gold standard” for trade deals, highlighting its benefits for workers, innovation, and economic growth. The agreement follows the conclusion of trade negotiations last year, during which Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the need to prevent extremist ideologies from exploiting democratic freedoms. Both countries are also collaborating on a Vision 2035 roadmap to enhance cooperation in defense, technology, climate, education, and people-to-people connectivity.

Cameron noted that the deal is projected to boost the GDP of both nations by nearly £5 billion. The bilateral trading relationship, already valued at £48 billion, will become more efficient, making daily trade cheaper and quicker. Additionally, the agreement is expected to increase financial trade by over £25 billion annually in the long term. Cameron reiterated that the trade agreement sends a strong message about the effectiveness of the rules-based order in international trade, benefiting both economies and their citizens.
