India Aims to Boost Global Orange Economy Share to 15%
Nagpur hosted a significant event today as industry experts gathered for a one-day media workshop titled ‘Varta,’ aimed at preparing a future-ready workforce for India’s burgeoning creative economy. Dr. Ashish Kulkarni, a member of the Board of Directors at the Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT), emphasized the pivotal role that film makers, digital creators, and other creative professionals play in establishing India’s prominence in the global orange economy. Currently, India contributes about 3 percent to this sector and aspires to enhance its share to between 12-15 percent within the next decade.
During the workshop organized by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Dr. Kulkarni pointed out the strategic initiatives being undertaken to achieve this ambitious goal. He revealed that the IICT is set to launch the ‘Kaushal Bodh’ curriculum in partnership with the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), aimed at nurturing creativity and skills in students from an early age.
New Learning Opportunities for Students
In addition to the curriculum rollout, Dr. Kulkarni noted plans to establish AVGC (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics) Content Creator Labs across 500 colleges and 15,000 schools nationwide. This initiative seeks to create a robust framework for skill development in the creative sectors.
Since July 2025, IICT has functioned as the National Centre of Excellence for the AVGC-XR sector from the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) complex in Mumbai. The institute is set to offer skill-based courses via a Hub-and-Spoke model, ensuring accessibility to students in both urban and semi-urban areas.
Showcasing India’s Storytelling Heritage
Dr. Kulkarni also highlighted India’s rich storytelling heritage and indigenous knowledge systems, which are increasingly finding a place in global digital content. He noted that various government ministries and creative institutions are working together to develop specialized courses tailored to the evolving demands of the creative industry, thus generating new opportunities for skill enhancement.
The event’s chair, Smt. Smita Vats Sharma, Director General (West Zone) of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, outlined several of the ministry’s initiatives during her address. Alongside her, senior editors and media representatives participated actively, engaging in meaningful discussions about the future of India’s creative economy.
The welcoming remarks were provided by Smt. Jaydevi Pujari Swami, Deputy Director of the PIB, while Sh. Saurabh Khekade, Media and Communication Officer, coordinated the proceedings. The program drew to a close with a vote of thanks from Sh. Dhananjay Wankhede, who holds the additional charge as Media and Communication Officer at the PIB.
