India’s Economy Poised to Reach $7 Trillion This Decade, Potentially Doubling by Mid-2030s

India’s economy is projected to reach $7 trillion by the end of this decade, according to Vinay Mohan Kwatra, the country’s ambassador to the United States. Speaking at the IX USISPF Leadership Summit 2026, Kwatra outlined a long-term growth roadmap, emphasizing significant economic advancements ahead. Currently valued at approximately $4.3 trillion, India aims to transition to a $14 trillion economy by the mid-2030s and ultimately achieve a target of $25 to $30 trillion by 2047.

Strengthening US-India Trade Relations

During the summit, US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, indicated that the two nations are nearing the finalization of a trade agreement. He expressed enthusiasm for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s potential visit to the United States, stating that the interim trade deal would be completed “sooner rather than later.” Gor highlighted the ongoing engagement of US President Donald Trump in fostering India-US relations and the importance of regular Quad ministerial meetings.

Gor shared insights from his recent discussions with President Trump, noting the strengthening economic ties between the two countries. He mentioned that both nations are witnessing increased business exchanges weekly, creating a mutually beneficial situation. On the interim trade agreement, Gor acknowledged the complexity of the negotiations, which involve thousands of items and extensive legal considerations. He expressed optimism about the progress made thus far and the likelihood of wrapping up the deal soon.

Regarding a potential visit by Trump to India, Gor suggested it could occur next year, but not during the midterm elections. He reiterated the desire to facilitate this visit as soon as possible. The upcoming 2026 G20 Summit is set to take place in Miami, Florida, on December 14–15, marking the first time the United States has hosted the G20 Leaders’ Summit since 2009.
