US Ambassador Sergio Gor Indicates Progress in India-US Trade Deal Negotiations
The proposed US-India trade agreement is nearing completion, with only 1% of the issues left to resolve, according to US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor. Speaking at the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum Leadership Summit, Gor expressed confidence that the pact would be finalized soon after nearly 18 months of negotiations.
Gor emphasized that most aspects of the deal are complete, with only a few items remaining on both sides. He noted that while trade agreements typically take years to finalize, the India-US negotiations have progressed relatively quickly. He compared the timeline to the European trade deal, which took 20 years to conclude, stating, “As long as we beat the European deal, I think we’re in good shape.”
Trade Deal to Provide Business Certainty
The ambassador stated that the agreement would enhance certainty for businesses involved in bilateral trade. He described the deal as a source of stability for individuals and companies trading between the two nations. Gor highlighted the intensive pace of negotiations in recent weeks, with high-level engagements occurring frequently. He mentioned that Indian Minister Piyush Goyal had traveled to New York, followed by Ambassador Greer visiting Delhi shortly after.
Ambitious Trade Target
Gor pointed out the significant growth in bilateral trade, which has surged from $20 billion to $220 billion over the past two decades. He reiterated the ambitious target set by US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to elevate bilateral trade to $500 billion in the coming years. Gor remarked, “That’s an astounding number that is unmatched,” and noted that India exports more to the United States than to any other country.
Upcoming Quad Meeting
In addition to trade discussions, Gor announced that the Quad foreign ministers are scheduled to meet in the Philippines in about two weeks. He credited the strong personal rapport between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi for enhancing bilateral relations, recalling Trump’s fond memories of his previous visit to India.
