Ram Gopal Varma Set to Helm Daya Nayak Biopic, Reports Say

Veteran filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is reportedly in the early stages of developing a new crime drama that delves into Mumbai’s storied past. The project centers around the life of Daya Nayak, a renowned encounter specialist known for his significant role in Mumbai’s policing history. Industry sources suggest that Varma is currently shaping the screenplay and narrative approach for this biographical film, which is expected to receive backing from a major studio.
Script Development Underway
According to insiders, the concept of a Daya Nayak biopic has been in circulation for some time, but interest has surged recently. A source familiar with the project shared, “The idea has been around for a while, but in recent months there has been renewed movement on it. Right now, the priority is getting the screenplay right and deciding the lens through which Daya Nayak’s story should be told.”
The filmmakers are exploring various ways to present Nayak’s journey, which has sparked considerable discussion within Mumbai’s law enforcement community. The narrative promises to offer a unique perspective on one of the most talked-about figures in the city’s policing history.
Possible Link to the Company Franchise
Interestingly, discussions have also included the potential to connect this biopic to Varma’s acclaimed Company universe. An insider revealed that the filmmaker had previously considered a sequel to his 2002 gangster drama, tentatively titled Company 2, which would focus on encounter specialists rather than gangsters.
The source noted, “In 2010, there were conversations around fitting it organically into the larger world of Company. While nothing has been decided yet, it has come up during discussions.” Daya Nayak is expected to serve as a consultant during these early conversations, although no final decision has been made regarding whether the biopic will stand alone or integrate into a larger cinematic universe.
Ram Gopal Varma’s Upcoming Projects
This development comes at a time when Ram Gopal Varma is making headlines with several ambitious projects. One of his most anticipated films is Syndicate, a crime thriller that Varma describes as a tribute to the new generation of filmmaking. He recently mentioned that the success of Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar 2 has significantly influenced his creative direction for this upcoming project.
Additionally, Varma has officially announced Sarkar 4, which will see the return of Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan as Subhash Nagre and Shankar Nagre, respectively. The script for this political crime drama has reportedly been finalized, with production set to commence following initial work on Syndicate.
