Donald Trump Announces Potential Reimposition of Russian Crude Sanctions Following Hormuz Reopening

US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that the United States is preparing to reimpose sanctions on Russian oil shipments. This statement follows the resumption of crude oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, enabled by a recent agreement with Iran to resolve the Middle East conflict. Trump made these remarks during the G7 summit in France, emphasizing that oil is now flowing through the critical transit route.

Sanctions Waiver Eased Oil Market Pressure

Previously, the United States had implemented a temporary sanctions waiver that allowed certain Russian oil cargoes already at sea to continue their journey. This decision raised concerns among European allies who were advocating for stronger actions against Russia. The waiver was initially introduced in March when crude prices surged, and it was extended as the conflict in Ukraine persisted. The easing of sanctions was a response to supply concerns in global crude markets, particularly due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

G7 Focuses on Ukraine and Global Stability

Trump’s comments came during the first full day of the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, where leaders discussed the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and the implications of the US-Iran agreement. Following the announcement regarding Iran, Trump indicated that the US would now concentrate on efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that G7 leaders are united in their support for Ukraine and believe that Kyiv is prepared for ceasefire negotiations, while accusing Russia of lacking genuine intent for peace. The discussions also highlighted concerns over energy security and the enforcement of sanctions against Russia, as European leaders continue to push for stricter measures targeting Moscow’s oil and gas revenues.
