Hardeep Singh Puri Confirms India Holds Over 60 Days of Crude and Gas Stocks, Assures No Energy Supply Shortage

Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri stated on Saturday that India is not facing any energy shortages, despite ongoing concerns related to the conflict in Iran. Speaking in Ludhiana, Puri assured that the country has adequate supplies of crude oil, LPG, and natural gas. He emphasized that India has sufficient reserves to meet its energy needs and has successfully reduced its reliance on LPG imports through increased domestic production.

Puri highlighted that India currently holds crude oil and natural gas stocks sufficient for over 60 days. He noted that the domestic production of LPG has risen significantly, from 32,000 metric tonnes per day to 54,000 metric tonnes per day. This increase has contributed to a comfortable LPG supply situation, with stocks available for 75 to 80 days.

Despite a rise in global oil prices due to the Iran conflict, Puri claimed that India has managed to keep domestic fuel prices stable. He provided comparative data showing that petrol prices in India decreased by 3.1% between May 2022 and May 2026, while prices surged in several other countries. Puri attributed the price stability to three reductions in excise duty implemented by the government, which he said imposed an additional burden of ₹1 lakh crore on the budget.

Addressing the cap on diesel sales, Puri explained that the 200-litre limit was introduced to combat black marketing. He also mentioned the government’s initiative to promote alternative fuels, noting that there are currently 47 E85 fuel pumps in the National Capital Region, with plans to expand this number to 500 by December 2026 and 5,000 by December 2027. Additionally, he encouraged LPG connection holders to transition to piped natural gas where feasible.
