Marriott Reports Robust Domestic Travel Amid West Asia Conflict

Strong domestic travel has bolstered the Indian hospitality sector, despite a decline in inbound traffic due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. David Marriott, chairman of Marriott International, noted that over 40% of travelers flying to India and other parts of Asia from the West transit through the Middle East, which has slowed inbound tourism. However, local travelers are adapting by changing their destinations and continuing to travel within India.

After a dip in March, business has rebounded. Rajeev Menon, Marriott’s president for Asia Pacific (excluding China), reported that cancellations surged at the onset of the conflict, leading to a negative revenue per available room (RevPAR) growth projection. However, by April, RevPAR growth shifted from flat to marginally positive, and last month saw a return to double-digit growth. Current forward bookings remain strong, indicating a positive trend.

Marriott International is optimistic about a robust recovery once the conflict subsides. David Marriott expressed confidence that travel will rebound, potentially stronger than before, similar to the post-pandemic recovery. He highlighted India’s resilience and economic growth, stating that the country is on track to become Marriott’s third-largest market, surpassing Mexico. Currently, Marriott operates 220 hotels in India, with plans to expand significantly, leveraging the rising outbound travel from the country.

The significance of India is further underscored by the recent opening of Marriott’s landmark 10,000th property in Ranthambore. David Marriott shared a personal moment regarding this achievement, noting that his father, chairman emeritus J.W. Marriott Jr., was eager to witness this milestone. The inauguration coincided with the birth anniversary of his late mother, adding emotional weight to the occasion.
