NESAC Meets to Boost Space Technology in Northeast India

In a pivotal meeting today, Union Minister for Communications and Development of North-Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya M. Scindia convened with key officials in Shillong to discuss advancements and future strategies for the North-Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC). The gathering included Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Minister of State for DoNER Sukanta Majumdar, and Dr. V. Narayanan from ISRO, showcasing a collaborative effort for regional development.

Strategic Initiatives for Development

Scindia laid out five key initiatives aimed at transforming NESAC into a cornerstone for regional growth. These initiatives include high-resolution village resource mapping, regular monitoring of natural resources, and fostering geospatial startups in the Northeast. A significant highlight is the development of NER-Shield, a digital platform focused on disaster resilience, alongside a framework for Northeast Green Wealth and Natural Capital Accounting.

Project Progress and Future Vision

The recent meeting reviewed the progress of NESAC projects, noting the completion of 50 initiatives since the previous Society Meeting in Tripura, with an additional 78 projects currently underway. These projects span agriculture, disaster management, weather services, and more, showcasing the impact of space technology on various sectors.

Scindia emphasized the importance of the Vision NESAC roadmap, which outlines a gradual transformation towards space-enabled governance. This strategy aims to evolve from Smart Analytics to a fully Autonomous Ecosystem, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for technology-driven development.

Strengthening Resilience and Innovation

Addressing the need for enhanced disaster resilience, Scindia proposed the creation of localized alert systems that integrate with telecom networks. He also advocated for precision agriculture platforms, which utilize geospatial tools to increase productivity and market access for farmers. The minister highlighted the potential of drone technologies, aiming to leverage NESAC’s expertise to boost livelihood opportunities for both youth and women through skill development initiatives.

ISRO’s Role in Strengthening NESAC

Scindia recognized the crucial role played by ISRO in empowering NESAC’s mission. He pointed to recent missions like Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya-L1 as testaments to India’s scientific prowess and capability to deliver impactful technological advancements.

As the meeting drew to a close, there was a strong reaffirmation of commitment between NESAC, ISRO, DoNER, and the Northeastern States to utilize space technology as a fundamental catalyst for inclusive and sustainable development across the region.
