University of Liverpool Expands Global Reach with New Bengaluru Campus
In a pivotal development for international higher education, the Ministry of Education announced the approval for the University of Liverpool to establish a branch campus in Bengaluru, Karnataka. This significant milestone aligns with the goals set forth in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes enhancing educational collaboration across borders.
The Letter of Approval (LoA) was presented by Dr. Vineet Joshi, the Secretary of the Department of Higher Education, during a ceremony attended by several distinguished guests. Among them were Hon’ble Union Minister for Education Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Hon’ble External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, and the UK’s Foreign Secretary, Rt. Hon. Yvette Cooper. This collaboration symbolizes the strengthening ties between India and the UK in the field of education.
University of Liverpool’s Journey to Approval
The University of Liverpool originally received a Letter of Intent (LoI) on May 26, 2025, in New Delhi, under the University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations pertaining to foreign higher education institutions in India. In the past year, the university successfully completed all necessary academic and infrastructure preparations. Following a thorough assessment by the UGC to ensure compliance with Indian regulations, it has now been granted the LoA to officially commence operations.
Programs and Academic Opportunities
The new campus in Bengaluru will provide a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, focusing on fields such as business management, computer science, game design, finance, and biomedical sciences. The university anticipates diversifying its offerings further in the upcoming years, attracting students from various academic backgrounds. This expansion exemplifies NEP 2020’s ambition to foster an internationalized higher education environment, facilitating greater academic collaboration and student mobility.
Significance of the Partnership
As a prominent institution established in 1881, the University of Liverpool is recognized globally for its academic excellence and innovative research. Its decision to open a campus in India signals the increasing appeal of the country’s higher education landscape, bolstered by progressive regulatory reforms. The establishment of this campus is expected to broaden educational prospects for students and enhance academic cooperation on an international scale.
The opening of the University of Liverpool’s campus in Bengaluru not only enriches India’s educational offerings but also strengthens the educational partnership between India and the UK. As both nations work together to elevate their educational standards, this initiative represents a significant step forward in cultivating a globally integrated educational ecosystem.
