UPSC Rolls Out Real-Time Face Authentication for Exam Integrity

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has taken a significant step to strengthen the integrity of its examination process by implementing a real-time face authentication system during the recently conducted Civil Services and Indian Forest Service (Preliminary) Examination, 2026. This innovative technology ensures that the candidate present at the exam is the same person who applied, thereby effectively combating impersonation and enhancing the overall security of the examination.

The face-authentication protocol was successfully utilized across all 2,072 examination venues nationwide. This application, developed in-house with the technical support of the National e-Governance Division (NeGD) from the Ministry of Electronics and IT, allows invigilators to verify candidate identities in real-time through mobile-phone-based authentication.

Each candidate now must go through the face-authentication process before entering the examination hall. To facilitate this, UPSC has distributed detailed standard operating procedures (SOPs) to all states and examination venues. Furthermore, invigilators received comprehensive training to ensure they could effectively implement this new system. A notable advantage of this technology is its cost-efficiency—it requires no special hardware and can run on any Android smartphone, which many invigilators already use.

The speed of the face-authentication process is impressive, averaging only 6–8 seconds per candidate. This efficiency helps prevent lengthy queues at examination centers. During peak entry times, the application successfully processed around 12,000 authentications per minute, showcasing its scalability and robustness.

Dr. Ajay Kumar, the Chairman of UPSC, expressed pride in this initiative, stating, “This is a new step taken by UPSC to ensure impersonation-free exams. The technology is fully developed in-house with help from NeGD. However, the challenge lay in deploying the solution at scale, leveraging the existing invigilation workforce for face authentication, training them, and accomplishing all this within a short time frame. UPSC, NeGD, and MeitY teams have done a remarkable job in this implementation across 5.5 lakh candidates and over 2,000 venues.”

The successful deployment of real-time face authentication marks a pivotal enhancement to the Civil Services Examination process, underscoring UPSC’s commitment to transparency, fairness, and embracing technological advancements in public examinations.
