India Boosts Pharmaceutical Manufacturing with Green Chemistry Project

India is making strides to enhance its position as a leading global pharmaceutical manufacturing center. The Technology Development Board (TDB) under the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, has announced its support for Bioneemtec India Private Limited in Chennai. This funding backs a significant initiative titled “Manufacturing of Minoxidil, Tranexamic Acid, Dequalinium Chloride, their Intermediates and Drug Liposomes.” The project aims to commercialize eco-friendly green chemistry technologies for producing essential pharmaceutical ingredients and sophisticated drug delivery systems, which will help reduce import reliance and ensure healthcare security.

The initiative will establish advanced manufacturing capabilities for pharmaceutical intermediates, Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), and groundbreaking drug delivery systems. By integrating batch and continuous-flow chemistry technologies, the project seeks to enhance production efficiency, improve product quality, ensure operational safety, and promote environmental sustainability while decreasing the dependency on imported products.

A significant highlight of the project is the development of a unique method for producing Tranexamic Acid, which is crucial for managing bleeding disorders. This technology uses a cost-effective and eco-friendly synthesis route to produce high-purity products, all while minimizing waste and simplifying the process. Furthermore, it will bolster domestic production of Minoxidil and Dequalinium Chloride along with their vital intermediates, enhancing local manufacturing within pharmaceutical supply chains that currently rely heavily on imports.

Innovation is at the forefront of Bioneemtec’s strategy, particularly with the creation of proprietary Drug Liposome APIs built on advanced nanotechnology platforms. These liposomal formulations target therapeutic applications such as the treatment of breast and skin cancer and have shown promising results in terms of controlled nanoparticle characteristics. The company is also taking steps to protect its intellectual property, paving the way for the further development of advanced targeted drug delivery solutions.

Shri Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary of TDB, emphasized the future of pharmaceutical manufacturing relies on sustainable and technology-focused production systems. He stated, “Indigenous development of advanced APIs, critical intermediates, and novel drug delivery platforms will be instrumental in strengthening India’s global pharmaceutical manufacturing position. TDB is dedicated to supporting innovative enterprises that generate high-value technologies while promoting import substitution and healthcare security.”

The leadership at Bioneemtec India Private Limited expressed appreciation for the support, highlighting that this project will enable them to accelerate the commercialization of their green chemistry-based manufacturing technologies and advanced pharmaceutical products. This initiative is set to foster the development of domestic capabilities in API manufacturing and next-generation therapeutic formulations, creating opportunities for both local and international markets.
