BRICS Tackle Corruption in First Anti-Corruption Meeting
The inaugural meeting of the BRICS Anti-Corruption Working Group (ACWG) took place virtually on June 2-3, 2026, under India’s presidency. The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) of the Government of India led this significant session, which aimed to enhance international collaboration against corruption.
Ms. Rachna Shah, Secretary of DoPT, kicked off the meeting by emphasizing the importance of ongoing international cooperation and the development of robust institutions to combat the evolving challenges of corruption. She introduced the presidency’s theme: “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” This theme reflects the group’s commitment to strengthening asset recovery efforts, addressing cross-border corruption, and promoting governance that values ethics and transparency.
Key Areas of Focus
During the meeting, participants engaged in detailed discussions regarding two primary focus areas: International Cooperation for Asset Recovery and Tackling Cross-Border Corruption, as well as Enhancing Transparency and Accountability in Governance. Delegates shared insights on improving cooperation among practitioners, tracing and recovering illicit assets, addressing fugitive offenders, and using innovative digital tools to foster accountability and minimize corruption risks.
Collaboration on Asset Recovery
On June 2, 2026, alongside the first ACWG meeting, BRICS experts on asset recovery convened to outline their vision and future strategies. This meeting focused on enhancing informal cooperation via a directory of focal points, developing simplified templates for information sharing, and ensuring regular engagement among practitioners.
Next Steps
The initiatives and discussions from this meeting will be built upon in the upcoming second BRICS Anti-Corruption Working Group Meeting, which is slated for August 4-5, 2026, in Hyderabad, Telangana. This continuation of dialogue underscores BRICS nations’ commitment to fighting corruption and building a more transparent world.
