NHRC Investigates Trafficking Case of Tribal Girl in Odisha
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has taken significant action in response to a harrowing case involving a 17-year-old tribal girl from Kankadahada in Dhenkanal district, Odisha. According to media reports, the young girl was trafficked to Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, where she faced two years of abuse and exploitation. This alarming situation came to light when the victim managed to escape and seek help from local authorities.
Initial reports indicate that the girl, along with three other females, was lured to Uttar Pradesh with false promises of employment. During her ordeal, she was allegedly confined for nearly three months and subjected to repeated sexual assault. The situation escalated to such an extent that when the girl became pregnant, she was coerced into undergoing an abortion against her will. Consequently, she was sold to another individual for Rs. 50,000 and was further abused by multiple attackers.
The NHRC, having taken _suo motu_ cognizance of the media report dated May 29, 2026, expressed grave concern over the reported human rights violations. In light of the seriousness of the situation, the Commission has issued notices to the Director General of Police in both Odisha and Uttar Pradesh, as well as the District Magistrate of Dhenkanal. These officials are required to submit a comprehensive report within two weeks detailing the status of ongoing investigations and the measures taken to ensure the victim’s relief and rehabilitation.
After her escape, the girl approached the Jhansi police, where her statement was recorded. However, reports suggest that little action was taken by the police, and she was simply provided with a train ticket back to Odisha. Upon her return, the Odisha Police began recording her statement, and an investigation has since been initiated.
The NHRC’s involvement highlights the pressing need for better protection mechanisms for vulnerable communities, especially in areas known for human trafficking. The Commission’s call for accountability underscores the importance of prompt and humane responses from law enforcement agencies in cases of human rights violations.
