Bihar’s NH-31 and NH-231 Set for Major Upgrades
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to a significant upgrade of the Khagaria-Purnea Section of NH-31 and NH-231 in Bihar. This project, projected to cost Rs. 3,936.05 crore, will transform the road into a four-lane thoroughfare stretching 143.529 kilometers. The initiative aims to improve traffic flow and road safety across multiple districts, including Khagaria, Bhagalpur, Katihar, and Purnia.
The upgrade is designed to rectify severe geometric deficiencies, sharp curves, and heavy congestion in urban areas. A new Greenfield Bypass around Purnea City, measuring 6.729 kilometers, will also be constructed as part of this initiative. Once completed, travelers can expect reduced journey times of around two hours, alongside enhanced fuel efficiency and overall vehicle operating costs.
Improving Connectivity and Economic Growth
This project promises to bolster connectivity between key economic and logistics hubs across Bihar. Travelers will benefit from seamless access to five PM Gati-Shakti Economic Nodes, which include a textile cluster, two mega food parks, and two seafood parks, as well as 11 logistic nodes comprising major railway stations, an airport, and several national and state highways.
With these upgrades, the corridor will facilitate faster movement of goods and passengers, which is expected to significantly stimulate regional development and socio-economic growth. By enhancing multi-modal integration, the infrastructure will ensure smoother transportation services across diverse sectors.
Investment and Employment Opportunities
The project, in addition to improving road conditions, is poised to create substantial job opportunities. It is estimated to generate approximately 32.59 lakh person-days of direct employment and around 40.55 lakh person-days indirectly. This employment boost will have a ripple effect on local economies, providing much-needed job security and income to many households.
