North Eastern Council to Host 73rd Plenary in Shillong
The North Eastern Council (NEC) is gearing up for its 73rd Plenary Session, set to take place on June 4, 2026, in Shillong, Meghalaya. The session will be led by the Hon’ble Union Home Minister and NEC Chairman, Shri Amit Shah. Notable attendees will include the Hon’ble Union Minister for the Development of North Eastern Region, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, the Hon’ble Minister of State for DoNER, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, as well as the Governors and Chief Ministers from the eight North Eastern States.
Prior to the main plenary, a crucial pre-Plenary meeting on June 3, 2026, will focus on key initiatives like Bamboo, Agarwood, and the Ashtalakshmi Darshan. This meeting will bring together the Secretary of the Ministry of DoNER, Chief Secretaries from the eight states, and senior officials from both state and central governments, allowing for a robust exchange of ideas ahead of the main discussions.
Key Discussions and Development Initiatives
Established under the North Eastern Council Act of 1971, the NEC acts as the central planning authority for the North Eastern Region, promoting cooperative federalism and coordinated development. The upcoming plenary aims to review the progress made by Chief Minister High-Level Task Forces in various critical development sectors.
During the session, presentations will cover a wide array of topics including Tourism, Agriculture, Investment Promotion, Sports, Economic Corridor Development, and Infrastructure. The objective is to ensure transparency and coordination among the states and stakeholders, paving the way for achieving collective developmental goals.
Review of DoNER Initiatives
Additionally, the meeting will assess significant initiatives led by the Ministry of DoNER, such as outcomes from the North East Investment Summit and Bankers’ Conclave, youth-focused programs, and advancements in tourism and logistics. These discussions are aimed at bolstering investment and sustainability across the region.
Vision for 2047
One of the highlights of the plenary will be deliberations on the North East Vision Plan 2047. This ambitious roadmap intends to transform the North Eastern Region into a thriving center of economic activity, connectivity, innovation, sustainability, and cultural richness by the time India celebrates its centenary of independence.
Members of the North Eastern Council will also share their views on regional development priorities, identifying areas where inter-state cooperation can be enhanced to promote holistic growth.
The 72nd Plenary, which took place in Agartala in December 2024, set the groundwork for ongoing discussions that aim to reshape the socio-economic landscape of the North Eastern States.
