Innovative VYOMA Challenge Launched for Multilingual AI Solutions
The Digital India BHASHINI Division (DIBD) has teamed up with Current AI and Kalpa Impact to launch the VYOMA Innovation Challenge. This unique initiative seeks to stimulate the development of open-source, voice-first AI solutions that can function effectively in offline and low-connectivity environments. The challenge aims to enhance accessibility to AI technologies across India’s diverse languages and regions.
At the heart of this initiative is the recently unveiled Sunno Sutra, a multilingual, voice-enabled AI handheld device developed collaboratively by BHASHINI and Current AI. Unveiled during the IndiaAI Impact Summit 2026, Sunno Sutra serves as a reference platform, integrating language technologies with on-device AI capabilities. This innovative device allows for conversational experiences in various Indian languages without needing cloud infrastructure, making it suitable for rural and remote users.
Amitabh Nag, CEO of the Digital India BHASHINI Division, emphasized the importance of multilingual AI, stating, “Multilingual AI is not just a technological shift but a public-impact infrastructure for India, enabling inclusive access to services across languages at population scale.” He further highlighted how BHASHINI is committed to nurturing the Indian language AI ecosystem, with solutions like Sunno Sutra designed to reach even the most underserved communities.
The VYOMA Innovation Challenge invites a wide range of participants—startups, researchers, students, academic institutions, MSMEs, and independent innovators—to explore the capabilities of the Sunno Sutra platform. They are encouraged to enhance this device through new applications, hardware improvements, and optimizations tailored for varied field conditions. The challenge aims to inspire solutions across multiple sectors, including education, healthcare, agriculture, and governance.
Participants will first go through an open application process to be shortlisted. Twenty teams will gain access to developer kits and the Sunno Sutra platform to build and test their solutions. They will receive technical support from experts associated with BHASHINI and Current AI, ensuring they are well-equipped to create impactful innovations.
The final stage will culminate in a showcase of prototypes before an expert jury. Winning teams stand to gain prizes totaling up to ₹80 lakh and opportunities to deploy their solutions with government departments at both central and state levels.
This innovative challenge not only nurtures individual talent but also fosters collaboration within the innovation ecosystem, encouraging partnerships among startups, MSMEs, engineers, researchers, and academic institutions.
