India and South Africa Strengthen Ties in Historic Meeting

In a significant diplomatic engagement, H.E. Mr. Shipokosa Paulus Mashatile, the Deputy President of South Africa, met with the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, at Rashtrapati Bhavan today. This meeting marks Deputy President Mashatile’s inaugural visit to India, emphasizing the enduring and multifaceted partnership between the two nations.

During the meeting, President Murmu highlighted the long-standing friendship between India and South Africa, which is anchored in shared values and mutual respect. She noted that South Africa was the first country to forge a Strategic Partnership with India back in 1997, setting a precedent for collaboration on various fronts.

Shared Commitment to Global South

The leaders discussed their shared commitment to representing the Global South on international platforms. Both countries have a rich history of fighting colonialism and have emerged as leading voices advocating for developing nations. Through their cooperation in organizations such as the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement, and the G20, they aim to foster peace and prosperity not just for their citizens but also for other nations in the Global South.

Boosting Bilateral Trade

President Murmu expressed optimism regarding the bilateral trade between the two countries, currently valued at approximately USD 15.5 billion. She emphasized that there is significant potential to enhance this figure and called for the establishment of a conducive policy environment that supports business investments and activities between India and South Africa.

Commitment to Future Collaborations

Furthermore, she reaffirmed India’s dedication to its partnership with Africa, pledging to work closely with the African Union Commission. The goal is to promptly reconvene the India-Africa Forum Summit, highlighting the importance of intercontinental cooperation.

Throughout the discussions, both leaders acknowledged that stronger collaboration would yield substantial benefits for their nations and peoples, reinforcing the importance of their mutual relationship.
