IMAX Makes a Comeback in Hyderabad After 10 Years with Three New AMB Cinemas

On June 1, 2026, IMAX Corporation and Asian Cinemas announced an exciting partnership to introduce three new IMAX® with Laser locations in India, specifically through the AMB Cinemas brand. Two of these state-of-the-art theaters will be situated in Hyderabad, a key city in the Telugu film industry. The first of these locations is set to open at the AMB Classic before the end of 2026, while the remaining two are scheduled for 2028. This marks a significant return of IMAX to Hyderabad after a decade-long absence.

IMAX’s Return to Hyderabad

The return of IMAX to Hyderabad is highly anticipated, especially since the city has been without an IMAX theater since the closure of the iconic Prasads IMAX in 2015. This previous location was one of the first IMAX theaters in India and played a crucial role in the company’s international expansion. The new theaters are expected to cater to the growing demand for premium cinematic experiences among local audiences. The excitement surrounding this development is palpable, particularly with the upcoming release of the Indian film *Varanasi*, directed by the renowned S.S. Rajamouli. His previous films, *RRR* and *Baahubali: The Conclusion*, are among the highest-grossing Indian films ever shown in IMAX.

AMB Cinemas’ Commitment to Quality

Sunil Narang and Bharat Narang, Managing Directors of AMB Cinemas, expressed their enthusiasm for this collaboration, highlighting Hyderabad’s deep-rooted love for cinema. They emphasized that bringing back the prestigious IMAX format is a matter of pride for their brand. AMB Cinemas aims to provide audiences with top-notch cinematic experiences, and partnering with IMAX aligns perfectly with this goal. The Narangs conveyed their excitement about this blockbuster collaboration, which they believe will elevate the moviegoing experience in Hyderabad.

IMAX’s Growth in India

IMAX has seen substantial growth in India, expanding its presence by nearly 60% since 2020, now boasting 34 operational locations. The year 2025 marked a record for IMAX in India, with box office earnings reaching $25.6 million, including significant contributions from international films. India has consistently ranked among IMAX’s top ten markets, driven by a vibrant cinema culture and a diverse array of content. The market has also become a key player in IMAX’s local-language strategy, with a record number of Indian-language releases in 2025.

Advanced Technology for Enhanced Experience

The new IMAX locations will feature IMAX with Laser technology, which is designed to provide an unparalleled cinema experience. This advanced system delivers crystal-clear 4K images and precision audio, setting a new standard for moviegoers. The technology includes a groundbreaking optical engine and custom-designed lenses, ensuring brighter images and a wider range of colors exclusive to IMAX screens. As IMAX continues to innovate, the upcoming slate of films, including *The Odyssey* and *Dune: Part Three*, promises to keep audiences engaged and excited about the future of cinema in India.
