New Delhi Roundtable Aims to Bridge Skills Gaps for Growth
The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has teamed up with the World Economic Forum (WEF) to launch an important initiative in New Delhi. Today, the High-Level Roundtable of the India Skills Accelerator (ISA) convened under the theme “From Insight to Action: Closing Skills Gaps for Growth.” This gathering brought together prominent leaders from various sectors, including government, industry, and academia, to discuss vital steps for addressing the emerging skills gaps in India and enhancing the country’s reputation as a global talent hub.
Collaborative Initiative for Skill Development
Launched in January 2026 with Union Cabinet approval, the India Skills Accelerator is a pivotal effort designed to ensure that India’s workforce is prepared for the future. Hosted by the MSDE, this initiative is part of the WEF’s Global Accelerators Network. Its primary goal is to promote collaboration between public and private sectors, aligning skilling frameworks with the changing demands of the labor market, and to develop innovative skill financing models. Special focus is placed on sectors such as artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, supply chains, and the green economy.
Leadership and Vision
The roundtable was co-chaired by esteemed leaders including Shri Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Education; Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, Minister of State for Education and Development of the North Eastern Region; Ms. Shobana Kamineni, Executive Chairperson of Apollo HealthCo Limited; and Mr. Sanjiv Bajaj, Chairman and Managing Director of Bajaj Finserv. They were joined by Mr. Mirek Dušek, Managing Director at the World Economic Forum.

Discussions at the roundtable revolved around the significant forces influencing India’s labor market and validating priority interventions to tackle critical skills gaps. A coalition of stakeholders was formed, united in their commitment to advancing the agenda of the India Skills Accelerator.
Shri Jayant Chaudhary emphasized the potential of India’s demographic advantage, stating, “India’s demographic strength can become the world’s greatest growth engine if we are able to continuously align skills with the evolving demands of technology, industry and society.” He highlighted the collaborative nature of the India Skills Accelerator, where various sectors come together to create solutions.
Dr. Sukanta Majumdar added that the future of education and skills lies in integrating learning with employability. He stressed the importance of equipping institutions to prepare students for rapid technological shifts and the need for a lifelong learning mindset.
Ms. Saadia Zahidi, Managing Director of the World Economic Forum, noted that India is well-positioned to influence the future global workforce. She emphasized the need for robust cooperation among government, industry, and educational institutions to ensure that skills development matches the pace of change in the economy.

At the conclusion of the roundtable, stakeholders expressed a collective commitment to advance structured public-private collaborations. Their focus will be on workforce transformation, skills financing, emerging technologies, and fostering inclusive growth. The outcomes from the discussions are expected to shape the implementation roadmap for the India Skills Accelerator, bolstering India’s status as a leading global talent hub.
The event saw participation from various sectors, including representatives from major companies like Apollo Hospitals, Bajaj Finserv, Tata Consultancy Services, and Wipro, along with critical input from national organizations and academic institutions.
