Indian Railways Reports Strong Freight and Passenger Growth in May 2026
Indian Railways has successfully upheld its freight growth trajectory, loading a remarkable 145 million tonnes of freight in May 2026. This figure marks a 1.3% increase compared to May 2025, buoyed by impressive performances in key sectors such as Iron Ore, Steel, Fertilisers, and other goods.
This growth in freight loading occurs against the backdrop of ongoing geopolitical challenges in West Asia, which have had indirect repercussions on logistics and supply chains. Nevertheless, Indian Railways remains committed to ensuring the smooth transit of essential commodities across the nation, utilizing robust operational monitoring and efficient asset management.
Key Commodity Performance Highlights
Among the various commodities transported, the segment labeled as Balance Other Goods has seen a stellar growth of 16%. Meanwhile, Iron Ore loading has grown by 4.8%, and the transportation of Pig Iron and Finished Steel has increased by 3.5% compared to the same period last year. The fertilizer segment also witnessed a significant boost, with a 6.2% rise, showcasing the Railways’ dedication to supporting critical economic sectors.
Coal remains the leaders in railway freight traffic, sustaining steady growth with nearly a 1% increase over the previous year. To address the needs of thermal power stations and uphold energy security, priority has been given to coal movement, with extensive monitoring taking place throughout the network.
Container Traffic and Economic Support
Indian Railways has stepped up its oversight of domestic and EXIM container traffic aimed at enabling efficient freight movement that contributes to regional economic activity. These strategic initiatives have been crucial in maintaining freight growth and ensuring the smooth functioning of supply chains, even amid challenging circumstances.
Passenger Travel Numbers Surge
On the passenger side, Indian Railways reported carrying over 61 crore passengers in May 2026, up from about 59 crore during the same month last year. This increase can largely be attributed to the Non-Suburban segment, which saw a remarkable rise of 7.4%, with passenger figures climbing from 28 crore to 30 crore. This trend underscores the continued preference among the populace for rail travel, whether for short or long-distance journeys across the country.
To accommodate the influx of travelers during the busy summer season, Indian Railways has introduced numerous Summer Special Trains on various routes. The organization is also enhancing passenger experiences through the launch of modern train services. Currently, 164 Vande Bharat services are in operation, including the new Sleeper Vande Bharat service connecting Howrah and Kamakhya. Additionally, the count of Amrit Bharat services has expanded to 68, with three new services inaugurated in May 2026.
