NHRC Launches Summer Internship Programme for Future Human Rights Leaders
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India commenced its esteemed four-week Summer Internship Programme (SIP) 2026 today in New Delhi. This initiative aims to cultivate human rights awareness among postgraduate students from various disciplines. A total of 100 students were selected from 1,668 applicants across 40 institutions spanning 21 states and union territories, representing fields such as Law, Social Sciences, Psychology, and Journalism.
Inauguration by NHRC Chairperson
Justice V. Ramasubramanian, Chairperson of NHRC, India, inaugurated the programme. During his address, he highlighted the transformational changes brought about by agricultural, industrial, and digital revolutions. However, he underscored the unchanging essence of liberty, equality, and fraternity worldwide, emphasizing the significance of human rights. Justice Ramasubramanian remarked that while many students pursue internships to enhance their academic credentials, the true essence lies in gaining profound knowledge and understanding society.
A Mini India Representation
He referred to the diverse selection of interns as a representation of ‘Mini India’, aimed at promoting human rights consciousness among students from varied backgrounds. Encouraging the interns to maximize their learning experiences, he expressed that if even a few students emerge with increased empathy and commitment to human rights, the programme would fulfill its objectives.
Insights from NHRC Members
Justice (Dr.) Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi, another NHRC member, noted that this internship offers students a cultural exchange opportunity, fostering a deeper understanding of identity and enhancing youth power. He urged the interns to utilize the knowledge gained and become advocates for the unheard.
Smt. Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, also an NHRC member, elaborated on the intertwining of human rights and values within Indian culture. Quoting ancient philosophies, she encouraged the interns to view the programme as more than just an academic exercise but as a pathway to personal growth and responsible citizenship. She reminded them that human rights extend beyond legal frameworks and are integral to everyday empathy and conduct.
Holistic Learning Experience
Shri Bharat Lal, Secretary General of NHRC, articulated the organization’s commitment to nurturing young minds through comprehensive internship programmes that reach even remote areas. He stressed the importance of youth in preserving human rights and promoting democratic values and urged the interns to focus on empathy and understanding in their endeavors.
Prior to the inauguration, NHRC Joint Secretary Shri Samir Kumar described the unique blend of academic backgrounds represented in the programme. He elaborated on the enriching learning environment, which includes interactive sessions, group research projects, and field visits to various institutions designed to deepen participants’ grasp of human rights issues.
