BRICS Launches High-Level Dialogue to Boost Livestock Technology

India’s leadership within BRICS reached a new milestone with a virtual High-Level Dialogue on Advanced Livestock Technology and Feed Systems held on June 1, 2026. Organized by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, the dialogue aimed to foster international collaboration in the livestock sector, gathering experts, policymakers, and research representatives from across BRICS countries.

Key Participants and Contributions

The event saw the participation of notable figures, including Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh), Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying; and Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel, Minister of State for the same departments. They were joined by Shri Naresh Pal Gangwar, Secretary of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Dr. Meenesh Shah, Chairman of the National Dairy Development Board, and other senior officials.

Representatives from Brazil, China, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Russia, the UAE, and Iran also contributed to the discussions, which were moderated by Dr. Thanawat Tiensin, Assistant Director General at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Their collective aim was to drive forward the livestock sector through innovation, knowledge sharing, and effective feed systems.

Significance of the Dialogue

A highlight of the session was Shri Lalan Singh’s emphasis on the critical role that livestock plays in enhancing rural livelihoods, empowering women, and ensuring nutritional security within BRICS nations. He addressed the pressing challenges facing the sector, such as low productivity, feed shortages, various animal diseases, and the impacts of climate change. He called for innovative solutions and strengthened cooperation among the BRICS nations to tackle these issues effectively.

Similarly, Prof. Baghel pointed out the urgent need for advanced livestock technologies to meet the growing challenges, highlighting climate change and emerging animal diseases. He encouraged collaborative efforts for creating inclusive and sustainable livestock systems that can improve farmers’ economic conditions.

Innovation and Collaboration at the Forefront

Dr. Meenesh Shah delivered his welcome address from Anand, Gujarat, emphasizing the necessity of innovation and sustainable practices within the livestock sector. Shri Naresh Pal Gangwar, during his remarks, reiterated livestock’s role in food security and stressed the importance of scientific approaches and quality feed in strengthening sustainable livestock development.

Throughout the dialogue, participant nations exchanged their most effective strategies and innovative methods in livestock technology and feed systems, focusing on enhancing food security and supporting rural growth.

Looking Ahead

Concluding the event, Ms. Varsha Joshi, Additional Secretary of the DAHD, reinforced the commitment to ongoing cooperation among BRICS countries. The dialogue underscored a shared endeavor to harness technology and collaboration in promoting sustainable livestock development, aiming to strengthen global food security and nutritional health.
