India Expands Olympic Rowing Team Ahead of Major Competitions

In a significant boost for Indian rowing, the Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) has inducted 22 talented rowers into the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) Development Group during its 174th meeting. This strategic move comes in preparation for the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya and other upcoming international competitions.
The selection of these athletes follows rigorous annual national trials and the finalization of crew members by the Rowing Federation of India (RFI). The newly formed group will engage in intensive training sessions aimed at enhancing their competitiveness at major events like the Asian Games and the World Cup circuit, thereby elevating India’s profile in the sport.
Diverse Crew Set for Global Challenges
The 22 rowers have been organized into six specialized boats, including Men’s Single Sculls (M1X), Men’s Double Sculls (M2X), Men’s Quadruple Sculls (M4X), Lightweight Men’s Double Sculls (LM2X), Men’s Coxed Eight (M4-), and Women’s Coxless Fours (W4-). Among the notable participants are Balraj Panwar, a promising competitor set to represent India at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and Arvind Singh, who won a silver medal at the 2022 Asian Games. Additionally, Jaswinder Singh, who clinched two medals at the same event, will be part of this distinguished team.
Preparing for Future Olympic Aspirations
While the primary focus for most of the inducted athletes is the 2026 Asian Games, certain crews are also being trained with an eye toward the long-term development path that will include the Commonwealth Games in 2030. This approach seeks to bolster India’s rowing infrastructure and ensure a sustainable pool of talented athletes across various categories.
Rowing has not been part of the Commonwealth Games since the 1986 edition held in Edinburgh, but discussions are ongoing to reintroduce the sport for its centenary games in India in 2030. The induction into the TOPS Development Group reflects India’s commitment to reviving this sport and promoting broader participation at the international level.
