India Launches Annual Health Check-Up Initiative for Workers

In a significant move aimed at enhancing the well-being of workers, the Union Minister of Labour & Employment, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, is set to launch a nationwide Annual Health Check-Up Initiative for workers aged 40 and above on May 7, 2026. The initiative will kick off from the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Medical College & Hospital in New Delhi, with simultaneous events occurring at 11 other ESIC hospitals across the nation. The launches will be attended by Labour Ministers, Members of Parliament, Members of Legislative Assemblies, and other esteemed dignitaries.

Strengthening Worker Welfare

This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to reinforcing social security and ensuring the dignity of labour under the “Shramev Jayate” framework, as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It plays into the broader reforms introduced through the four New Labour Codes, which unify 29 existing central labour laws into a streamlined structure. These reforms are designed to lessen compliance burdens, encourage formal employment, and expand social security coverage.

Mandatory Health Check-ups and Coverage

Central to the initiative is the Code on Social Security, 2020, which broadens access to benefits for workers in unorganized, gig, and platform sectors. A pivotal aspect of this new labor framework is the requirement for mandatory Annual Health Check-Ups for all workers aged 40 and above. For those enrolled in the ESI Scheme, these health check-ups will be managed through ESIC’s extensive hospital network. The focus will be on early diagnosis, preventive healthcare, and ongoing health monitoring.

Additionally, workers engaged in hazardous operations—including those handling toxic substances or operating heavy machinery—will be required to undergo medical check-ups regardless of their age. This ensures that all aspects of occupational health are addressed. The initiative includes provisions for systematic record-keeping of health data and regular monitoring to support long-term health outcomes for the workforce.

A Vision for the Future

This comprehensive initiative marks a pivotal step towards enhancing occupational health systems across India, ensuring that comprehensive healthcare is accessible to the workforce. It aligns with the broader goal of achieving a Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047, laying a solid foundation for the health and security of workers.
