India and Algeria Enhance Defence Ties in Historic Meeting
The inaugural Joint Commission meeting between India and Algeria took place in New Delhi on May 5, 2026, marking a significant step in strengthening the defence relationship between the two nations. During the meeting, officials discussed various critical areas including military training, joint exercises, medical cooperation, and the defence industry, all aimed at expanding bilateral defence cooperation activities.
New Framework for Cooperation Established
At the meeting, both India and Algeria signed the Rules of Procedure that will guide the implementation of their defence cooperation. This framework is expected to facilitate future Joint Commission meetings and streamline collaborative efforts in defence. The session was co-chaired by Shri Amitabh Prasad, Joint Secretary for International Cooperation from India, and Major General Kaid Nour Eddine, Chief of Staff of the Naval Forces of Algeria.
The Indian delegation comprised representatives from the three armed services, the Integrated Defence Staff, the Department of Defence Production, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Armed Forces Medical Services, and the Ministry of External Affairs.
Strengthening Bonds through High-Level Engagement
The defence ties between India and Algeria have been on the rise since the signing of a Defence Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2024. This recent meeting, highlighted by the visit of Major General Kaid Nour Eddine, underscores both countries’ dedication to collaborate on mutual interests in defence.
Prior to the discussions, Major General Kaid Nour Eddine honored the sacrifices of fallen heroes by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, a gesture that signifies respect and tribute to the valor of military personnel.
The Algerian delegation is also scheduled to engage with various defence industries during their visit, further promoting cooperation and partnership opportunities in the defence sector.
