AI Innovations to Transform Health Claims at National Hackathon

The National Health Authority (NHA) is set to host the Grand Finale and Showcase of the AB PM-JAY Auto-Adjudication Hackathon on May 8–9, 2026, at the A. V. Rama Rao Auditorium in Bengaluru. This exciting event, organized in collaboration with the IndiaAI Mission and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), has already attracted over 3,500 participants, highlighting the growing interest in using artificial intelligence to improve India’s health systems and public health insurance.

With the registration phase concluding on April 13, 2026, the hackathon promises to be a dynamic platform for presenting innovative solutions aimed at reforming health claims management under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). During the inaugural session, attendees will hear keynote addresses from prominent officials, including Shri S. Krishnan from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and Dr. Sunil Kumar Barnwal, CEO of the NHA.

Showcasing Innovation in Healthcare

Finalist teams will unveil their AI and machine learning-based solutions tackling crucial challenges such as clinical document classification, adherence to Standard Treatment Guidelines (STGs), radiological image validation, and the detection of fraudulent or AI-generated medical documents. These solutions show promise for real-world deployment, poised to enhance the speed, accuracy, and integrity of claims processing.

Expert Panels and Discussions

The two-day event will host insightful panel discussions featuring leaders from various sectors, including government, industry, startups, and academia. One session, titled “Building AI for Indian Healthcare,” will delve into strategies for scaling AI innovations within the healthcare ecosystem, aligned with the digital public infrastructure built under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).

Another panel discussion, “Future of Claims Adjudication,” will focus on how AB PM-JAY can streamline claims through artificial intelligence, automation, and data-driven governance frameworks, fostering a more transparent and accountable claims process.

Addressing Challenges in AI Utilization

A dedicated session will tackle “Fraud, Waste and Abuse in the Era of AI,” which will explore the responsible use of AI in detecting fraud while ensuring transparency, accountability, and data privacy are upheld.

Currently, AB PM-JAY is one of the largest publicly funded health assurance schemes, processing around 40,000 claims daily across more than 1,900 treatment packages. The hackathon is a crucial step in enhancing the NHA’s capacity for auto-adjudication across an expansive range of medical services.

The event will conclude with the recognition of winning teams whose innovative solutions hold significant potential for practical implementation, furthering the vision of a transparent and technology-enhanced claims ecosystem.

Through this initiative, the NHA reiterates its commitment to leveraging digital public infrastructure and responsible AI to boost healthcare access, improve service delivery, and achieve optimal health outcomes for all beneficiaries across the nation.
