Union Minister Reviews Progress of Eklavya Model Schools Nationwide
The Hon’ble Union Minister of Tribal Affairs, Shri Jual Oram, recently convened a high-level meeting to evaluate the ongoing construction of Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRSs) across the country. The meeting, organized by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, brought together senior officials from various Central and State Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), the Central Public Works Department (CPWD), and representatives from multiple states via videoconference.
The EMRS initiative is a flagship program by the Ministry, aimed at providing quality residential education to Scheduled Tribe (ST) students in remote regions, catering to grades VI through XII. With a vision of bridging educational divides, the scheme focuses not only on academic success but also on the holistic development of tribal children through sports and various skill-building activities.
Progress Review and Timelines Discussed
During the meeting, Shri Oram meticulously reviewed both the physical and financial progress of EMRS construction. Major executing entities, including CPWD and several other state and national agencies, outlined their current advancement and projected timelines for project completion. The discussions included a performance assessment based on timelines, quality assurances, and overcoming existing obstacles.
Accelerating Project Completion
The Union Minister underscored the critical importance of finishing EMRS projects on schedule, as they play a significant role in delivering quality education to tribal students in underserved areas. He directed all agencies involved to enhance construction activities by optimizing labor and resources on-site. Regular field visits were also recommended for senior officials to monitor progress closely.
In addition, Shri Oram urged state officials to prioritize resolving any outstanding issues, especially those related to land and forest clearances. He requested that construction agencies regularly provide updated progress reports of ongoing initiatives, including specific issues and plans required for timely project completion. Accountability was emphasized, with delays in projects to reflect on the responsible construction agencies.
Commitment to Tribal Welfare
Reaffirming the government’s dedication to tribal welfare, Shri Oram described EMRSs as transformative initiatives vital for empowering tribal communities through access to high-quality education. He linked the expansion of EMRSs to the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, which targets a developed and self-reliant India by 2047 through inclusive growth and equitable development.
Smt. Ranjana Chopra, Secretary of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, highlighted the need to address challenges like approach roads and water scarcity swiftly. She called on executing agencies to collaborate actively with state governments to resolve these issues. Dr. Pratima Verma, from the National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS), presented the construction status, revealing that of the 728 approved EMRSs, 428 school buildings have been completed, while 249 are in progress and 46 are at the pre-construction stage.
