Karan Johar Reflects on Met Gala Journey: A Full Circle Moment and a Selfie Wish for Daughter Roohi

Filmmaker Karan Johar recently shared insights into his fashion and cinematic journey as he prepared for the prestigious Met Gala 2026 in New York. Speaking at the Empire State Building, Johar reflected on how his career has come full circle, marking a return to fashion on one of the world’s most significant platforms. He expressed excitement about representing Indian culture at the event and shared a personal wish to take a selfie with singer Sabrina Carpenter for his daughter, Roohi.

From Costume Designer to Filmmaker

Karan Johar began his career as a costume designer, a passion he discovered at the age of 22. He reminisced about his early days in the industry, stating, “I did start as a costume designer. That was my primary passion.” However, it was on film sets that he found his true calling in filmmaking. Despite his transition to directing and producing, Johar has maintained a strong connection to fashion throughout his career. He recalled his first encounter with fashion magazines, particularly Vogue, which he discovered at the age of 12. At that time, Vogue was not readily available in India, prompting him to seek out old issues from a small shop.

The Significance of the Met Gala

Attending the Met Gala holds great significance for Johar, who has followed the event for years. He described the experience of walking the red carpet as a representation of storytelling through fashion, artistry, and meticulous craftsmanship. This year’s theme, “Fashion is Art,” resonates deeply with him, making his presence at the event even more meaningful. Johar emphasized the importance of showcasing Indian culture on a global stage, stating, “I’m here to represent my country and also showcase our deep cultural heritage through my garment.” His commitment to highlighting Indian artistry reflects his pride in his heritage.

A Personal Touch

On a lighter note, Johar shared a personal wish for the evening. As a father of twins, he expressed his desire to meet singer Sabrina Carpenter, who is a favorite of his daughter Roohi. He hopes to take a selfie with Carpenter, emphasizing that it would be a special gift for his daughter. Johar also revealed that his outfit for the Met Gala was designed by his close friend and renowned designer Manish Malhotra. Their long-standing collaboration in film has added emotional significance to this particular project. Johar noted, “He went into the world of fashion, I went into film, and we crossed paths beautifully.” Together, they aim to represent India at this prestigious event.

Collaboration and Cultural Representation

The partnership between Johar and Malhotra extends beyond friendship; it is rooted in a shared journey through the entertainment industry. Johar expressed pride in their collaboration for the Met Gala, highlighting the emotional value of their work together. As they prepare to showcase their creation, Johar feels a sense of fulfillment in representing their country on such a prominent platform. The Met Gala not only marks a significant moment in his career but also serves as an opportunity to celebrate Indian culture and artistry on an international stage.
