Project Deepak Celebrates 66 Years of Service in the Himalayas
On May 4, 2026, Project Deepak of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) commemorated its 66th Raising Day in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. This milestone celebrates over six decades of unwavering dedication to enhancing strategic infrastructure in the Western Himalayas, an area of immense national importance.
Spanning critical districts such as Shimla, Kinnaur, Kullu, and Lahaul-Spiti, Project Deepak stands as one of the BRO’s oldest initiatives. The project has been instrumental in developing essential infrastructure, including the historic Hindustan-Tibet Road and pivotal sections of the Manali-Leh axis. Through its extensive efforts in constructing, upgrading, and maintaining vital road networks, Project Deepak has not only improved connectivity to remote border areas but also made significant contributions to national security and regional development.
Commitment Beyond Construction
In addition to its infrastructure projects, Project Deepak has showcased remarkable dedication to disaster management and humanitarian efforts. The project has spearheaded numerous successful rescue operations during natural disasters. In a notable instance in May 2023, BRO teams rescued approximately 300 stranded motorists at Baralachala Pass. Similarly, in July 2023, they evacuated over 250 civilians from Chandrataal in a challenging high-altitude rescue mission.

Established in 1961, Project Deepak has played a crucial role in executing infrastructure projects in some of the country’s most formidable terrains. Responsible for managing over 1,100 kilometers of roadways, including vital high-altitude and border roads, it has become an essential asset in enhancing defense preparedness.
