Air India Considers Reducing Daily Flights Amid Rising Jet Fuel Costs

With the rising costs of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), Air India is poised to cut back its operations by nearly 100 flights daily across both domestic and international routes. Currently, the airline operates around 1,100 flights each day. The most significant reductions are anticipated on routes connecting India to Europe, North America, Australia, and Singapore, particularly in June. This decision comes in response to a recent 5% increase in ATF prices, marking the second consecutive monthly hike as fuel costs continue to rise globally.

Impact of Rising Fuel Prices

The recent surge in ATF prices has raised concerns among airlines, particularly international carriers. On Friday, the price of jet fuel for international operators in Delhi increased by $76.55 per kilolitre, bringing the total to $1,511.86 per kilolitre. This increase follows a substantial hike in April, when domestic ATF prices were raised by 25%. Airlines are now facing intensified financial pressures, as fuel typically constitutes up to 40% of their operating costs. Even minor price increases can significantly impact profit margins, potentially leading to higher airfares for consumers.

The Federation of Indian Airlines, which includes major carriers such as IndiGo and SpiceJet, has warned that without government intervention to alleviate rising fuel costs, airlines may have to further reduce services. While the government partially reversed a sharp increase in domestic jet fuel prices earlier this month, no similar relief has been provided for international operations, leaving airlines in a precarious position.

Air India’s Operational Adjustments

Air India, in particular, has been significantly affected by these rising costs. A senior executive from the airline indicated that many of its flights are currently unable to cover operating expenses. The ongoing pressure from fuel prices could lead to even deeper cuts in services if the situation does not improve. The airline’s larger international footprint has made it more vulnerable compared to competitors like IndiGo, especially with the closure of Pakistani airspace, which has forced longer flight routes to Europe and North America. These longer routes not only increase fuel consumption but also raise crew-related expenses.

As a result, Air India has already reported losses exceeding ₹20,000 crore. The airline’s owners, Tata Sons, along with their strategic partner Singapore Airlines, are under increasing pressure to manage costs effectively and work towards restoring the airline’s financial health.

Future Outlook for Air Travel

The future of air travel in India may be uncertain as airlines grapple with rising fuel costs and operational challenges. The potential for further flight reductions could disrupt travel plans for many passengers, particularly during peak travel seasons. Airlines are now faced with the difficult task of balancing operational viability with customer demand.

As the industry navigates these turbulent times, the need for strategic planning and potential government support becomes more critical. Airlines are calling for measures to stabilize fuel prices and ensure that air travel remains accessible and affordable for the public. The ongoing situation highlights the delicate balance between operational costs and the necessity of maintaining a robust air travel network in India.
