Vaishnaw Unveils New Bullet Train Plan: Amaravati to Hyderabad in 70 Minutes, Pune to Mumbai in 48 Minutes

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology and Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, unveiled an ambitious plan on Tuesday to revolutionize transportation in southern India. Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Google Cloud India AI Hub in Visakhapatnam, he emphasized the proposed bullet train network as a key element for economic integration among major cities. The initiative aims to significantly reduce travel times and enhance connectivity between cities like Amaravati, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune, and Mumbai, fostering a robust economic corridor in the region.
Transformative Bullet Train Network
Vaishnaw described the bullet train project as a “high-speed diamond” for southern India, drawing comparisons to the successful Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train initiative. He highlighted that the new network would connect Amaravati to Hyderabad in just 70 minutes, while travel times to Chennai would be reduced to 112 minutes. Other routes, such as Hyderabad to Pune, are expected to take approximately 1 hour and 55 minutes, and Pune to Mumbai will be just 48 minutes. This transformation aims to create a unified economic zone, similar to what is being developed in the western corridor.
The minister’s vision includes not only faster travel but also the potential for increased economic activity and job creation across the region. By linking major urban centers, the bullet train network is expected to facilitate smoother movement of goods and people, thereby enhancing trade and tourism opportunities. The project is seen as a catalyst for regional development, promising to bring significant benefits to the local economies of the states involved.
Railway Infrastructure Expansion
In addition to the bullet train initiative, Vaishnaw announced plans to strengthen the South Coast Railway Zone, which is set to be officially notified on June 1, 2026. This long-awaited development is part of a broader strategy to enhance rail connectivity across the region. The minister also revealed plans to upgrade the existing Kolkata-Chennai double railway line into a four-line network, which will increase capacity for both freight and passenger services.
This expansion is projected to accommodate nearly 500 additional trains, improving access to critical ports, tourism sites, and cultural landmarks. The railway upgrades are expected to play a vital role in boosting the overall efficiency of transportation in southern India, making it easier for businesses and travelers alike to navigate the region.
Significant Investment in Andhra Pradesh
Vaishnaw highlighted a substantial increase in railway investment for Andhra Pradesh, noting that the state’s budgetary allocation has surged from Rs 886 crore for both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to Rs 10,134 crore solely for Andhra Pradesh. He mentioned that over Rs 1,06,000 crore worth of projects are currently underway in the state, which includes the modernization of 74 railway stations.
This financial commitment underscores the government’s dedication to enhancing the railway infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh, aiming to improve service quality and operational efficiency. The modernization efforts are expected to create a more reliable and user-friendly rail system, which will be crucial for supporting the region’s economic growth.
Focus on Sustainable Technology
During his address, Vaishnaw also emphasized the importance of domestic technology manufacturing, urging businesses, particularly data center operators, to produce servers within India. He called for alignment with the India AI mission, stressing that the growth of digital infrastructure must be accompanied by sustainable practices. This includes improving power efficiency, reducing water consumption, and promoting recycling and wastewater utilization.
The minister’s remarks reflect a broader commitment to ensuring that advancements in technology and infrastructure are environmentally responsible. He believes that the combined efforts in railway modernization and digital infrastructure will lay a strong foundation for future economic growth and enhance regional connectivity across southern India.
