Andhra Pradesh Set for Railway Transformation with New Initiatives
Visakhapatnam is poised for a significant railway transformation as the Union Government announced forthcoming advancements in the region. During the Ground Breaking Ceremony for the Google Cloud India AI Hub, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed that the much-anticipated Gazette Notification for the creation of the South Coastal Railway Zone will be issued, with June 1, 2026, set as the effective date. This initiative is expected to bolster railway administration in Andhra Pradesh substantially.
Highlighting the government’s commitment, Minister Vaishnaw noted that Andhra Pradesh will receive a record railway budget allocation of ₹10,134 crore. This marks a considerable increase from the ₹886 crore allocated in previous years for both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Major Railway Projects Underway
The state is currently witnessing the execution of railway projects worth approximately ₹1,06,000 crore, which aim to enhance connectivity across key locations, including ports, tourist destinations, and major urban centers. These efforts reflect a historic accomplishment in railway infrastructure within the country, with 74 railway stations undergoing redevelopment.
Specific infrastructure achievements include:

Passenger Services Enhanced
In terms of passenger services, the state now enjoys the convenience of 16 Vande Bharat trains and 22 Amrit Bharat train services, which significantly improve travel efficiency and comfort. Furthermore, the entire East Coast Railway Corridor is set to undergo an upgrade to a four-line network, which is expected to double its capacity and facilitate the operation of up to 500 new trains.
Future Connectivity Plans
Looking towards the future, the Minister elaborated on plans for high-speed connectivity across the major southern corridors, drastically decreasing travel times:
- Amaravati to Hyderabad – approximately 70 minutes

This high-speed network has been likened to a ‘High-Speed Diamond’ that will enhance mobility, promote economic integration, and stimulate regional development across Southern India.
Commitment to Development
Concluding his address, Minister Vaishnaw emphasized that these initiatives are a testament to the Union Government’s commitment to transforming Andhra Pradesh into a major railway and logistics hub, thus driving economic growth and regional cohesion.
