Indian Railways Enhances Services for Popular Route

In a significant move, Indian Railways has made the expansion of the Train No. 22961/22962 Mumbai Central-Ahmedabad Vande Bharat Express permanent, increasing its capacity from 16 to 20 coaches starting April 28, 2026. This change adds three AC Chair Car coaches and one Executive Class coach, enhancing seating availability on one of the country’s most traveled inter-city rail routes.

The decision to permanently augment the service is a direct response to the overwhelming demand experienced since its launch. Originally a temporary adjustment to address peak travel needs, this expansion reflects the Indian Railways’ dedication to aligning train capacity with passenger expectations.

Currently, there are 162 Vande Bharat services operational, achieving journey times that are up to 45% faster on several routes. Of these services, 90 consist of 8-coach formations, 38 feature the newly upgraded 20-coach configurations, and 34 retain the 16-coach format. This indicates about 23.45% of Vande Bharat services have upgraded to accommodate more passengers.

Boosting Economic Connectivity

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad route spans 491 kilometers, completing the journey in just 5 hours and 30 minutes. Along the way, the train stops at Borivali, Vapi, Surat, and Vadodara, making it crucial for business travelers, students, and tourists who rely on speed, comfort, and reliability.

In the fiscal year 2025-26, Vande Bharat trains saw nearly 4 crore passengers, marking a 34% increase from the previous year. Since their debut in 2019, these trains have transported over 9.1 crore passengers across more than 1 lakh trips, boasting occupancy rates that consistently exceed 100%.

Meeting Modern Passenger Expectations

The rising popularity of Vande Bharat services stems from changing travel preferences. Today’s passengers demand not just speed, but also enhanced comfort and punctuality. Features such as cleaner coaches, a superior onboard experience, and improved reliability have made Vande Bharat the preferred choice for many.

Indian Railways aims to meet the growing demand by permanently expanding high-demand services like the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Vande Bharat Express. This service is complemented by others, such as the Gandhinagar Capital-Mumbai Central Vande Bharat Express, which also strengthens economic connections between Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Innovative Features and Passenger Comfort

The Vande Bharat trains, characterized as semi-high-speed, prioritize passenger comfort and safety. Equipped with advanced safety technology, including KAVACH, these trains offer faster acceleration and more stable designs. Amenities such as ergonomic reclining seats, automatic plug doors, and a mini pantry enhance the travel experience. Each seat includes charging points, and surveillance is ensured through CCTV, providing a secure environment. Additionally, special facilities are available for Divyangjan passengers, ensuring inclusive travel for everyone.

The permanent upgrade of the Mumbai Central-Ahmedabad Vande Bharat service exemplifies Indian Railways’ commitment to adapt and grow in response to passenger needs. With millions choosing Vande Bharat daily, this addition ensures that travelers will always have a comfortable seat awaiting them.
