Government Boosts Welfare Schemes for Marginalized Communities
The Department of Social Justice & Empowerment is actively working to uplift various sections of society, including Scheduled Castes (SCs), Other Backward Classes (OBCs), senior citizens, victims of substance abuse, transgender individuals, and economically vulnerable groups. Union Minister for Social Justice & Empowerment, Dr. Virendra Kumar, recently reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering inclusive development and social justice through targeted welfare initiatives and interventions.
Enhanced Support for Scheduled Castes
As part of its ongoing efforts, the department focuses on educational empowerment for marginalized students belonging to Scheduled Castes. In the financial year 2025–26, over ₹7,981.47 crore has been allocated to benefit more than 75 lakh SC recipients. This substantial financial support showcases the government’s dedication to enhancing educational opportunities for these underprivileged groups.
Positive Growth in Welfare Expenditure
Expenditure on welfare schemes for Scheduled Castes has consistently increased, reflecting the government’s proactive approach to supporting these communities. Notably, there has been a 21% rise in funding under the Pre Matric Scholarship Scheme for SCs and others, alongside an 11.23% increase under the Post Matric Scholarship Scheme for SCs. Additionally, a 13.5% growth has been recorded for the Central Sector Scholarship for Top Class Education for SC Students, and a 16% increase has been noted under the SHRESHTA Scheme (Scheme for Residential Education for Students in High Schools in Targeted Areas) aimed at SCs. These figures, compared to the previous financial year 2024-25, highlight a clear upward trend in support for educational initiatives.
Commitment to Social Justice
The government’s comprehensive welfare schemes are geared towards a diverse array of marginalized communities, demonstrating a holistic approach to social upliftment. The focus on educational and economic improvement is a crucial step towards ensuring that every citizen has an equal chance to thrive and succeed. By prioritizing these initiatives, the government seeks to address historical injustices and create a more equitable society for all.
As these efforts continue to evolve, it is evident that the paths to progress for marginalized groups are being paved through substantial investment in education and societal support. The commitment to enhancing welfare for SCs and other disadvantaged communities reflects a broader vision of inclusive development and social justice.
