India and Egypt Strengthen Defence Ties in Cairo Meeting
The India-Egypt Joint Defence Committee (JDC) convened for its 11th meeting in Cairo from April 20 to 22, 2026. The discussions focused on enhancing defence cooperation between the two nations. The Indian team was led by Joint Secretary (International Cooperation) Shri Amitabh Prasad, accompanied by senior officials from the Ministry of Defence and Defence Forces. The Egyptian delegation comprised high-ranking officials from the Defence Forces and the Ministry of Defence.
During this productive meeting, both sides conducted a thorough review of previous discussions and outlined a proactive roadmap for future defence engagements. They formalized a bilateral defence cooperation plan for 2026-27. This plan emphasizes the expansion of structured military interactions, enhancing joint training exchanges, strengthening maritime security collaboration, and increasing the complexity of military exercises. Cooperation in defence production and technology is also set to be a priority.
Manufacturing and Collaborative Efforts
The Indian delegation showcased the impressive growth of the Indian Defence Industry, revealing that production has exceeded USD 20 billion, with exports amounting to approximately USD 4 billion to over 100 countries. In recognition of this progress, both nations agreed to collaborate on developing a defence industry cooperation plan. This partnership is poised to become a foundational aspect of India-Egypt defence relations, with a focus on exploring co-development and co-production opportunities in defence manufacturing.
Naval and Air Force Initiatives
On the sidelines of the JDC meeting, inaugural Navy-to-Navy Staff Talks took place. Here, the Indian Navy’s vital role in maintaining freedom of navigation in the Indian Ocean was emphasized, alongside the Indian Information Fusion Centre’s contribution to maritime security.
The Indian delegation also met with Lieutenant General Amr Abdel Rahman Saqr, the Commander of the Egyptian Air Force, to express gratitude for the ongoing cooperation between the air forces of both countries.
Honoring Sacrifices
In a gesture of respect, the Indian delegation laid a wreath at the HeliPolis War Memorial, honoring Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives during World War I and II.
The establishment of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defence cooperation in September 2022 marked a significant milestone in the India-Egypt defence partnership. With the elevation of their bilateral ties to a Strategic Partnership in 2023, this 11th meeting further solidified their commitment to regional security and stability.
