The legal conflict began when Tanuja Bhagat filed a suit against Roy Kapur Productions, claiming that the title “Matka King” infringed on her rights. Bhagat alleged that the series was based on the life of her late grandfather, Kalyanji Bhagat, whom she referred to as the original “Matka King.” She sought an urgent injunction to prevent the release of the series, arguing that it had been produced without her authorization. The matter was brought before Justice Sharmila Deshmukh at the Bombay High Court on April 15, 2026.
During the hearing, both parties presented their arguments. Ultimately, the court decided not to grant the interim relief that Bhagat sought, allowing Roy Kapur Productions to proceed with the series’ release. At a subsequent hearing on April 20, 2026, Bhagat’s counsel informed the court that they had received instructions to withdraw the suit.
