India’s First Chip Fabrication SEZ Unveiled in Gujarat
The Indian government has announced the establishment of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) dedicated to semiconductor manufacturing by Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing Private Limited in Dholera, Gujarat. Spanning over 66.166 hectares, this groundbreaking SEZ aims to create approximately 21,000 jobs, marking a significant step towards fortifying India’s position in the global electronics ecosystem.
Designed to support a spectrum of electronic hardware and software, including IT and IT-enabled services, this SEZ incorporates essential infrastructure and a streamlined approval mechanism to enhance operational efficiency. Importantly, this initiative will host India’s very first chip fabrication plant, which is expected to catalyze the growth of a self-reliant semiconductor industry.
Government Reforms Propel Semiconductor Sector
The government has proactively implemented several reforms to strengthen India’s semiconductor and electronics manufacturing landscape. Recent changes to the SEZ laws are tailored to attract high-value investments and promote innovation. These modifications include reducing the minimum land requirement from 50 hectares to just 10 hectares for semiconductor projects, enabling more flexibility in operational norms, and allowing domestic sales in the homeland under specific duty conditions.
The Board of Approval for SEZs has given the green light to several promising projects aligned with these recent regulatory changes. Notable investments include Micron Semiconductor Technology’s SEZ for assembly, testing, marking, and packaging in Sanand, Gujarat, with an investment of ₹13,000 crore. Additionally, Aequs Group is set to launch an electronic component manufacturing SEZ in Dharwad, Karnataka. These projects not only aim to bolster domestic manufacturing capabilities but also strive to create a skilled job market and reduce import reliance.
