IGL Expands PNG Network to Homes and Police Stations Amid Energy Supply Challenges
Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) is accelerating its expansion of piped natural gas (PNG) connections across Delhi-NCR, aiming to significantly increase its user base while reducing reliance on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). This initiative comes in response to recent disruptions in energy supplies due to conflicts in the Middle East, prompting a government push for broader adoption of PNG as a more stable alternative. IGL’s Managing Director, Kamal Kishore Chatiwal, announced ambitious targets for connection growth, highlighting the company’s commitment to enhancing energy security in the region.
Rapid Increase in PNG Connections
IGL has ramped up its daily PNG connection installations from 600-700 to an impressive 2,100-2,200. The company aims to reach a target of 5,000 connections per day in the near future. This expansion is not limited to residential users; IGL is also focusing on commercial establishments, particularly fast-food chains that have faced supply disruptions due to prioritization of domestic LPG consumers. Currently, IGL has successfully connected over 100 outlets of major fast-food chains to the PNG network, with plans for an additional 400 outlets identified for future connections. This strategic move is expected to enhance the reliability of gas supply for businesses that have been adversely affected by LPG shortages.
Extending PNG Supply to Key Institutions
In addition to expanding residential and commercial connections, IGL is working to provide PNG supply to all police stations in Delhi. This initiative aims to transition police canteens and cafeterias from LPG to piped gas, thereby alleviating the logistical challenges associated with cylinder refills. The shift to PNG is anticipated to streamline operations and improve efficiency for these essential services. Furthermore, Connaught Place, a central commercial hub in New Delhi, is now being integrated into the PNG network following the relaxation of previous regulatory hurdles. Officials have confirmed that the pipeline has already reached the outer circle of this bustling area.
Government Support and Infrastructure Expansion
The Indian government is actively supporting the transition from LPG to PNG, mandating that households with access to PNG must relinquish their LPG connections within 90 days. This policy is part of a broader strategy to enhance energy security and reduce dependence on imported fuels. IGL is targeting the addition of 485,000 new PNG connections within the next 90 days across its operational areas. The company’s extensive city gas infrastructure currently spans multiple regions, including Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and parts of Kanpur and Meerut, with a pipeline network exceeding 28,000 kilometers.
Current Energy Landscape and Future Goals
India’s natural gas production stands at approximately 92 million standard cubic meters per day, with city gas consumption, including PNG and compressed natural gas (CNG), accounting for less than one-third of this output. In contrast, LPG heavily relies on imports, primarily from Gulf countries. IGL currently supplies PNG to over three million households and operates more than 950 CNG stations, serving over 2.1 million vehicles. The company is particularly focused on achieving full PNG penetration in select localities, aiming to create LPG-free zones in areas such as New Moti Bagh and East Kidwai Nagar. As the energy landscape evolves, IGL’s initiatives reflect a significant shift towards more sustainable and reliable energy sources in India.
